People forget that 86 team started 14-0, then struggled later in the season before making a tourney run.

wasn't that when everyone got chicken pox?

Yep. I think LSU lost to Georiga due to a John Williams' errant full court pass that went out of bounds, and Georgia hit the subsequent winning shot. I remember LSU had a lot of players out sick.

Yep, chicken pox hit half of the team. That's why Blanton was moved to center. I can't remember if it was 85 or 86, but one of those years big John through an in bounds pass against Georgia across the court without anyone touching it. I think there was 1-2 seconds on the clock. Georgia got to inbound under their basket They scored and won the game. It was the craziest ending I have ever seen.

Only one actually got it but the Auburn game was postponed and they had a meltdown about it. So what if they moved their home game vs Kentucky a few days later so it wouldn't conflict with the Cotton Bowl.

Oh yuck, why'd you bring THAT up? I still remember that pass, and how it was the only way we could lose that game. Georgia was pretty good then too.

The chicken pox incident was surreal; we had a great team, and certainly a postseason run was a given by midseason. Then just about everyone got sick, and we had guys from the football team (Chris Carrier, etc) playing conference games. Just barely snuck into the tourney. But then everyone got well again, and I remember Dickie V saying how we were way better than our seed (11th?).

The John Williams Georgia play was in the '84-'85 season.

2/2/85--After John's length of court pass to no one, 1 second on the clock. Georgia inbounds the ball under their own basket, with Dennis Brown guarding the pass. Ball is lobbed inside, but tipped by DB, and clock did not start until Georgia player, can't remember who, catches it in mid air and banks it end. Very sad day at the Assembly Center. Clock should have started when DB tipped the pass and the game should have ended. Replay would have given us the W on this day.

Corrected date..

The UGA game was John's Freshman season. From under his own basket JW threw a pass the length of the court which touched nobody. UGA got the ball down by 1 with 1 second left. A simple lob to Cedric Henderson, who put it in right off the catch sunk us. All JW had to do was throw it off someone's face and game over.

As for Blanton playing center, Nikita Wilson was academically ineligible the second half of the 85-86 season which forced the move. That's also why we started 14-0. There's no question in my mind that if Nikita had stayed eligible we would have won it all. Pervis Ellison would have been Wilson's bitch.

Ok, I remember that being the case too. And yeah, Nikita would have shot that turnaround on him all game.

Another irony is that Barkley returned the favor with a 40 foot buzzer beater against the Tigers the following season if I recall correctly. Had the 3 point line been in vogue during DT's hole career he would have averaged 2-3 more points per game. Had an unbelievably soft shot from downtown.

Wasn't Derrick Taylor still playing in 1986? Did he play 5 years?

He graduated HS in 1981.

Yes, grade issues delayed him a year- but it all worked out with the Final Four team in '86....

don't think so. LSU murdered Auburn on the road and Auburn survived LSU missing two attempts at tip-ins at the buzzer in BR.
