In the late 80s/early 90s, wasn’t there a piano organ in the old stadium?

The early to mid 90’s was magic in the old Box. I was a kid and it was like being in the coolest place on earth to a kid obsessed with baseball

I thought so. I was a kid and was raised out there. Seems like they stopped around mid to late 90s maybe? I can still hear “hava nagila”. Would also play “Batman” theme song when Todd Walker came up to bat. This was before “walk up” music was a thing.

Same here. It was truly devastating when they tore it down. Like the song lyrics, “The day paradise put up a parking lot”. I have a playlist that is all the songs they played out there when I was a kid.

Walkup music was informally invented by Comiskey Park organist Nancy Faust who would play songs semi related to each batter.

The old Box was a great ballpark, the WPA era concrete grandstand, the gates with the baseball designs, the train tracks right up on the side of the stadium, the smoke coming from the concessions grill and blowing out over third base, the SEC school flags, and the old school light-up scoreboard.

The fans were right up on the field there and it was loud and rowdy.

Fence down the left field line was permanently broke in spots you could come and go and any hour.

I worked Bertman’s camp as a teenager half of the storage in the stadium was used for his camp. It wild thinking how much time I spent there as a kid.

Was a freshman the last year the box was in use. Went out there and got onto the field on a random weekday evening during the offseason with some buddies and played catch.

Good times

Started going to games as a kid in the 1990s and was a student at LSU during the last years. That last series against Mississippi state and of course the Super against UCI was incredible. Hated to say goodbye to the old ballpark but that was just about as perfect of a way to do it.

Snuck onto the field a couple of times.

It was kind of amazing how many LSU facilities were just open not that long ago:

Alex Box
Tiger Stadium
Long Field House
Natatorium
The “tunnels”

I remember sitting on the field during a game.

The “cooks” that ran the shack on the third base side had some interesting nick names (tick, flea, etc.) … when it rained they asked for volunteers from the crowd to help pull that heavy canvas tarp over the infield … the old school turnstiles at the entrances … waiting to hear if a fouled ball would hit a car behind the grandstand.

I remember how much of an upgrade we thought it was when they moved the light poles behind the seats.

The old Box was something magical.

I can’t even count how many grilled chicken sandwiches I had there, they were so good. It seemed like everyone had a nickname, at least in that section right past the 3B bag. The cooks, the ushers, the fans all had nicknames. Adults around us would sneak in collapsible coolers of beer and ride the umps and give the visiting bullpen a good time.

That was around 98, 99 maybe. LSU gave Southern the old lights so they could light up Lee Hines.

No doubt.

But guys, didn't the old Box have multi-colored signs on the outfield walls? And metal bleachers? And the bullpen on the field?

It clearly wasn't a good ballpark, right?
