Nuss will be a mythological creature one day… a good-to-great quarterback that stayed at one school for 4-5 years.

Kinda like Matt Flynn. I appreciate them, and others who stay the course, conquer obstacles and learn their trade. Unfortunately, guys that stay at a single school TWO years may one day be a mythological creature.

His skillset and physical abilities were never the issue. I'm more worried about his decision making. If he gets better in that category, next year could be special.

Played very well in the first half.
Struggled in the second half when our LG went down and A&M figured out they could come right up the middle over our backup LG and poor center play.

yeah, we had not only our backup LG, but a backup RG, plus poor center play. I think Florida had like 6 or 7 sacks, almost half of the total for the entire year. He never had a chance. Hell, there is a better chance for a QB with pressure from the outside vs just instantly right up the middle.

Bama

I will never forget that play when our great Center just let the LB come untouched right up the middle, just watched him, while blocking no one....almost like an Olay.

Is there any point in the season where you hold Nussmeier himself responsible for poor play?

I think we saw that the last few games. He was actually throwing the ball away, or checking down, when appropriate. Hell, he even ran a few times.

His biggest problem is that he believed in his arm so much that he would try to make a throw that wasn't there, instead of just throwing it away and living for another day. That comes with experience, and it is clear he was showing signs of moving in that direction towards the end of the year. He will still learning most of the year. Hell, Lagway is considered high on the heisman odds next year, and he threw more interceptions per pass attempt than Nuss, actually twice as many per attempt. Same with Beck and Ewers....more picks per pass attempt than Nuss.

Shoring up our interior line will help our passing game by boosting the running game. Nuss had a few mistakes that were solely on him but stepping up into the pocket was never really an option when center and left guard were turnstiles for the opp defense.

One of the announcers in a late game (maybe Jordan Rodgers, OU?) made the comment an off-season review of film can really benefit a QB (and hopefully Sloan as well) see where mistakes were made and improvement can happen(tuck and run, see the open man 7 yards downfield as opposed to the double-covered guy 25 years out, etc).

Hope Nussmier does nothing but footwork, agility and pocket drills all summer. He has to get way more explosive in his lower body...

He got tricked into a few interceptions and I think it messed with his head. Once he settled back in he was fine.

Next year should see improvement and the receiver room should provide a lot of speed etc.

He absolutely must get better at throwing a deep ball.

vs Texas A&M, Bama, and Flrorida *When Kept Clean In Pocket

Nuss was kept clean on 65% of his dropbacks, and put up:

quote:

58-99(58%comp)
3TD
3INT
596yds
6.02 YPA

Overall, In these 3 games on throws 10yrds or more: 15-49 (30% comp)

Im sure this is where you blame the WR's, huh

Definitely wasn't a "great year". He had a good year. Yes, oline wasn't great either but he threw some really bad picks and took too many sacks at critical times when the ball should have been thrown away.

True, but OU was 19th in the nation in yards allowed and Nuss' 277 was second only to Dart on yards passing vs OU. That's even with him missing time that game.

Why do you cherry pick stats? Those were also the 3 easiest games of the season from a stretch.

Pull his stats after Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Texas A&M.

Or pull his 3 game stats from A&M, Florida, and Bama.

We know what we have in Nuss. A guy when given a clean pocket can excel, but under pressure panics and tends to make bad decisions. Like throwing off his back foot.

I’m far from a nuss fanboy and criticized him heavily after tamu and Florida but OU has a very very strong defense.

There is no reason to not be excited about how he ended the season.

He's showing how he finished the season. Burrow had 7 TDs vs 4 INTs before his final 3 games in 2018 vs Rice, A&M and UCF where he finished 9/1 TD/INT.

There was literally the same argument in 2018. But look who Burrow played against. What about his 4 game stretch of 0 TDs vs 4 INTs against better competition?

Strangely enough, Burrow made the bad pick 6 in the bowl game and Nuss had the bad pick in his bowl game. Just coincidence, but interesting.

And, no this is not saying Nuss will have a Burrow-like 2nd season, but it does show signs of improvement.

When u can run the football (like we could not do) this will put less pressure on the passing game and if this happens he could have a heisman type year. We have to be able to run the ball and get screen passes in our game plan. Saban had screen passes and wheel routes and bama was very good at both.

Is this when Kelly started fiddling in the offense? It was obvious the last 3 weeks of the season & bowl game that the offensive playing calling flowed much better.
