Hate to be a downer, but i agree.
I simply dont care about the whole 18 thing. It just doesnt resonate with me.

I am indifferent to it, but the TEAM cares ...a lot..as do th coaches and support staff, the player who wears 18 is THE man in the football operations center, it is a very very big deal to the team....a few major boosters are semi involved and Saban and Miles let the numbers of long time people who support the team (Nader etc) get involved but in the end it his his choice, I again am somewhat indifferent but know it means a ton to the team....only one player I'm told has ever turned it down and he had a very good reason....The number is also a fully endowed scholarship as are. A handful of other football numbers...Mauck was the perfect example to start it off

Give it to CG3 so he and Tyron Johnson can both wear #3 and still play special teams together.

Good post, but I still dont give a shite anymore. Team performance and team wins is all I care about. Its time the athletic department stop this tradition. There are several men that young players will look to next year. Singling out just one is a slap in the face to all the men that have carried themselves with ultimate respect and leadership on the team.
