I mean I'm not saying we have a bad team, but we definitely have holes in the roster right now. We are losing a ton of production and have a lot of unknowns.

I feel like when you look around the college game that is the case for many teams. A lot of top production lost but a lot of teams with younger talent and also hitting the transfer portal. I feel like LSU isn't far off from having a team that can compete for an Omaha spot. Maybe 1-2 pieces away.

We'll be fine. The outfield defense will be the same - Kling in center will run everything down like Crews did and he has a stronger arm.

The infield defense will be better, overall. Tanks will get better, and our middle infield should be better, as Dugas was a weak spot and Thompson was error prone. 1st base is the only downgrade, but we should get more power production there. Neal is better all around than Millazo or Travinski, but we'll have all three if the strategy is to go with defense or the hot bat.

Offensively, is where we're going to have to have some guys step up. Guys like Neal, Kling, Frey, Braswell, and Jones really have a chance to step up and show better than they did last year. Travinski, Jones, White, Frey, and Kling should give us plenty of power. Pearson needs to be more consistent.

Honestly, this could be a really solid lineup and the talent is there. I'm not even counting on any Freshmen stepping up or additional transfers.
The portal could put this lineup over the top like Tommy White did last year.

We lost a lot of pitching, but have some solid depth coming back, especially if you count the transfers we know about. We'll go through the growing pains, I suspect, until Jay finally figures out who he can trust at the end of the year. Hurd is the only guy we can pencil in as a starter but we are going to have a lot of arm talent. We just need to figure out who can pitch...

Oh I'm not disagreeing with you there. Every team has holes at this point. But that guy made it seam like we were completely set for next year, which just isn't the case. There's a lot of question marks out there at the moment.

I expect all recruits drafted to sign, otherwise they wouldn’t have picked them. Those agreements are made before they are picked.

Absolutely. Will take multiple players to step up to fill in those holes for sure. Can't count on it as a for sure thing but hope they can do that.

That's not how it works. In the first 10 rounds, yes. Jaden Noot and Brady Neal were both drafted late in the draft last season and are both at LSU.

Not outfield.
Not infield (although we do downgrade at 1B).

You don't think we will be slightly worse in both areas?

I would be concerned if there was another team in the nation that had a Paul Skenes, a Dylan Crews, and a Tre' Morgan on their roster for 2024, but none do, so I think we'll be OK.

Seriously and look at what Florida is losing and Wake.

I have thoughts on what wound up being discussed here, but back to OP’s thread title, I’m curious about back end of the roster. If Mitchell is the only guy we lose from the class, Jay is going to have to have some hard conversations with guys coming up. I’m sure he was expecting the draft to take at least 2 or 3 more guys from the incoming class or our draft-eligible JRs.

I know Project doesn’t like this talked in his threads, but maybe this one’s safe. And I certainly mean no disrespect to any of the guys I’m about to name. But isn’t tomorrow (July 13th) the last day to enter the portal? He’s got to be talking to guys like Hellmers, Dutton, and even Collins about maybe putting their names in and looking around? Not that he’s cutting them or giving up on them, just that with the numbers crunch, they’re not guaranteed a spot on the roster, much less a role that actually pitches.

I also think he probably expected Christian Little to get drafted earlier than he did. On Off the Bench, he mentioned that all the current guys who got drafted should leave as “no-brainers,” except Little and Coleman who were drafted toward the back end. He said they would have decisions to make and that it may take a while to know what they’ll be. I think the new rule is they have until July 25th this year? He may have been trying to help them/their agents negotiate, but it sounded 50/50 (ish) they’d be back.

I hate the idea of “processing,” especially in baseball with limited scholarships. I wish that once you signed, you were guaranteed a spot for 4 years if you wanted. But the reality is that along with those limited scholarships come limited roster spots and hard conversations. shite, he told Edwards in January that he had about 2 outings to show him something to even make the team this year. Some guys may stay through the fall and try to compete and take their chances on having to transfer between semesters. Regardless, there are going to be some returning SOs and JRs who aren’t on the roster come spring, simply because we just have more players than spots.

I actually think we will be fine, have some bumps in beginning of the season, finding who fits where, but I do believe we have the right captain steering the ship and by time sec play comes around, we will be middle of pack, prob at least host a regional and u just never know if and when they can get hot!! Should be fun to watch
White will not see the pitches he seen this year unless others step up and prove they can hit around him

Lmao! Dude had .973% fielding, made 4 errors ALL year and turned 18 dp as THE starting 2nd baseman and he was "a weak spot"... LMAO!! Go back and look at Daughty's stats from last year. That position was VASTLY improved from 2022.

Oh, and he got drafted in the 6th round, so he seemed to do OK.

Don’t underestimate Jake Brown or Kade Anderson as starters next year. I wouldn’t be shocked to see one of them become a starter on Sunday and then work their way into Saturday

Than 2023 LSU? Definitely. Fortunately they won't be on our schedule.

Than anyone else in the country next year? Maybe not.

Trust in Jay with the portal. Good things are coming, just like last offseason. Our pitching is gonna be stacked.

That thread is very interesting.

It ends with Lester earl saying tanks won't ever play 3rd at lsu and will get in where he fits in
