Most people that do this never stepped foot in a classroom of the college they’re repping. I will never understand that concept.

these are the folks i was referencing in my post.

I've been an LSU fan since I was 5 years old. The college I attended does not change that. LSU first.

I used to miss my school's home games if an LSU game was televised and my friend still gives me shite because I'm an LSU fan that never attended LSU.

I just tell him to kindly go frick himself and shut up because the LSU game is on.

You ain't gotta ask permission to be a fan of any school. Plain and simple.

I am a ULL alumni. Went there because its closer to home and (was) much more affordable. Was a tiger fan the whole time and still am.

I’m not alumni of LSU but I grew up in the Baton Rouge area and am a huge fan. My dad, also not LSU alumni, used to take me to baseball games when I was a kid and I fell in love. Football becoming a powerhouse was just icing on the cake.

Being from the Baton Rouge area even if you didn’t go to LSU the school especially the athletic program helps the economy in the area when they are winning so in a way we all gain something from the university.

If you support LSU like you say you do, that's legit to me. And I am as proud an alumnus as you can get. One of the reasons I say this is because I was a fan 12 years before my freshman year at LSU when I attended my first game with my dad (LSU 21 Auburn 20).

A sheepskin doesn't NECESSARILY make you a better fan,
just one who may have had different life experiences.

I know my 4 years on campus were some of the best in my life, but that doesn't mean someone who developed a love for LSU in different ways than graduating from there can't be a huge fan.

There is no requirement to being a fan. Attending a school makes you no more a fan than any other. And vice versa, just because you paid one school for a service and a degree doesn’t mean you can’t support a different school’s athletic program you don’t owe your allegiance to any team. Anybody who says otherwise is a simpleton.

Being a fan of a team is derived from how it makes you feel when that team wins, how it kills you when it loses. Doesn’t make a bit of sense to put “rules” on what makes someone a “legitimate” fan or to worry what others think. If you’re a true fan of a team you know it.

Being a true fan has nothing to do with things like whether you attended school at a university. Alumnus does not equal fan, and vice versa.

Lots of kids in LA grow up bleeding p&g, kids that don’t end up going to LSU or going to college at all. I can tell you from personal experience having not gone to LSU (though oftentimes wishing I had) that my fandom for LSU has never weakened, never wavered.

I get this BS from Tech friends all the time.

I got a scholarship to NLU, graduated and moved away. Enjoyed my time there, still cheer for them even with newer name ULM

I will pull for most LA teams, but true fan passion is always LSU. As long as I can remember

Had family obligations to keep me closer to home and I couldn't afford to go there.

But can't deny who I rather see. Nothing against ULM, but LSU is the one. Hard to change 40 plus years of fandom.

Exactly. Just like many of us of are Saints fans but we never have been in the Saints organization.

I did not attend LSU, but I have been a fan since childhood. My Dad took me to my first game in Tiger Stadium in the 1960s. He and my mother both attended LSU and grew up in Baton Rouge. Most of my extended family went to LSU. I attended a small denominational liberal arts college and after that, seminary, because I was preparing to be a pastor. I love LSU and will be a fan until I die. So, as far as I am concerned, your support for LSU is in no way “lame.”

I played ball at a different college but I grew up loving Skip’s teams. I honestly don’t care if people think I’m a true fan or not based on that.

I attended LSU for two years, but the partying and the ‘scene’ at LSU were way too much for me at 19, so I transferred and graduated from a different school.

But now i write a check to TAF every year for almost six figures, so i’d be amused if anyone tells me i’m any less of a fan than someone who graduated from there.. besides, some of the biggest LSU fans i’ve known throughout my life never went to school there, and some never attended college at all.

My bigger issue is with "free agent" fans. The ones who bought a ton of LSU gear starting around 2000 ish, only to replace it with the Scarlet Letter ("A") gear in 2010. Most of whom have no college education. Don't get me wrong there are a ton of LSU fans that did not go to college, but they are loyal and diehard (and I am good with that).

No issue with guys who either couldn't afford it or got an opportunity to play sports at a smaller school. I did the same for two years before transferring into LSU.

You are either a fan of a school or you aren't. It's not really something someone else can decide for you

Non-alumni fans are part of what makes LSU special. If you grew up in this state (or have some other special connection through family legacy), the school belongs to you … period.

Lots of kids go out of state to small liberal arts colleges, or to nationally prestigious schools, and their connection to LSU only grows stronger. I have a cousin who went to Stanford in the 90s and wore his LSU baseball cap all over that campus. One of the biggest donors to TAF went to Emory. Hell, the biggest fan I know, and who has the most irrational hatred for Saban and Alabama, went to SMU.

I actually don't mind this discussion (it comes up several times every year in the offseason) precisely because I find it interesting to learn of all the other places some of these non-alumni fans attended.

Some of the biggest LSU fans I know never attended the university, but they bleed purple and gold every bit as much as I do.
