I have been an LSU fan since my childhood although I did not go to LSU until I went to law school at age 30. I still considered myself an LSU fan long before I went there, so anyone who is a fan can feel like they are connected to LSU.

LSU represents the State of Louisiana.

Every citizen of Louisiana owns a part of that great Legacy.

You're in like Flynn man, no graduate requirement. I'm an alum, but the more fans the merrier.

You would believe how many non alumni support LSU, especially in small towns across the state.

I didn’t go. Moved from LA my senior year of high school. Couldn’t afford the out of state tuition. Can now though, and I’ve seriously considered doing some grad work there.

I’m in the same base as you and would’ve attended LSU if I were blessed with just a bit more athletic talent, or had decided not to pursue sports at all in college.

I think we’re as real of fans as anybody. I still love the university, support it when I can, and am thankful for the education it gave to my family members.

Non-alumni fans

Being a fan of a particular team or school has nothing to do with whether you went to that school or not. It's like falling in love, you don't just choose who you fall in love with, it just happens or it doesn't, you cannot force your emotions to feel that way. There's a lot of Saints fans that have never played for the Saints or lived in New Orleans. It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, how old or how young, when you fall in love it just happens, it's magical and should be treated with reverence, honor, because not everyone will fall in love. Though I was born and raised a 25 minute drive from Tiger Stadium, I wasn't born in love with LSU, it happened over time during my adolescents. Maybe that love and passion was cultured with my dad's love for the Tigers, maybe not, all I can say is there was a time when I was a child I didn't have this love and then, when I was still a child, I did. I don't know how or why I fell in love with the Tigers. Love can't be explained and not everyone does fall in love. You keep that passion burning for the Tigers my friend, you fell in love, let nobody ever take that away from you!

I am of the opinion that the vast majority of LSU fans are not alumni. Being an alumni is not in any way a requirement for being a true fan. My dad never went to college but rather joined the Army to fight in WW2 right out of high school, yet he was a die hard LSU fan. This notion of having to be an alumni to be a true fan is a load of crap.

You're more accepted and done more for LSU than Ben Simmons, so you're good.

Is your friend a Saints fan? If so, did he actually play for the Saints or at least work for them in some other capacity?

By his logic, he can’t be a fan of the Saints if he’s not affiliated with them in some way, correct?? He has to turn in his Saints fan card.

I'm lucky to be both an alumni and a lifelong fan of LSU. I wouldn't want it any other way.

In terms of arguments, I think it's retarded that people think you have to go to school to some place to be a fan of them. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you watch games, spend time talking about LSU, go to games, go to LSU events, but their merchandise, donate to the school, etc., then you are certainly a fan in my book.

This!

I have two degrees from LSU and enjoyed my time there but some of the most rabid fans I know are non-alumni. One has missed less than 10 home and away games since the mid 90s.

Also a couple of TAFs biggest donors are non-alumni. I’d have a hard time telling those guys their millions donated don’t stack up to someone who sat in a classroom at LSU.

I am a fan of all LSU stuff, but graduated from NLU. I do think LSU alums have a deeper sense of pride in the school, I just think the time spent on campuses leads to a fondness that can't be duplicated.

I don't think non alumni are any less fans, I just think they/we are missing some depth in our love for the school.

I hear you and agree. But I think when that alma mater is sung there is a spot in an alums heart that is touched that a non alum just does not get.

But I am getting old and soft. My daughter graduated from La Tech recently. I got a tear in my eye seeing the pride she has in her school.

My grandfather was a Tiger fan; my Dad played for the Cajuns in the late 60s. I grew up a fan of both because I never really saw them as rivals. To me, one was the flagship and one was the local school.

I went to USL (then graduated after it switched to ULL), and kept pulling for both unless they played each other. Even then, I’d pull for the Cajuns in baseball (because a loss wouldn’t derail LSU’s season and would boost ULL), but in football I side more with LSU because growing up, they were the bigger deal...they were our state team on TV.

Have a friend whose father went to LSU and was a rabid fan of all things LSU. His dad had so much passion for LSU and took him to so many sporting events as a kid that he was all LSU for as long as he could remember. He always planned to go to LSU for college but ended up getting an academic full ride to an Ivy League school instead, which he did not turn down. He ended up an LSU graduate school alum as well and he pulls for both teams, but ultimately he’s always bled purple and gold.
