no, you need players AND good play-calling to consistently win against good teams.

Yep....players score TDs and kick FGs and win games....they also fumble and throw interceptions that lose games....this statement is not that far-fetched.

Worthless coach speak. Football is both strategy and execution, coaches are, responsible for both.

So he agrees with the guy who said, "It's not the X's and O's, It's the Jimmys and Joes."

In our case, "O's" has a double meaning.

You guys act like he should have thrown players under the bus.

It would be like a starbucks CEO saying "Our workers dont make good coffee, we make good coffee" at an employee retreat.

Let me help.

Its a recruiting tool nothing more. In other words its all about the players. "Come here and its not the plays that will be the star or the coaching staff but you the player." Or..."do you want to be just a cog in a machine or do you want to excell and show your skills on a national stage?"

Don't read too much into it.

Not - but it means if you lose, the players didn't win the game.

I don't have a lot of heartache with that philosophy - it's true and kids like the honesty. It's still - ultimately - the coaches' responsibility to put them in the best possible position to win the game.

Curious the Rants thoughts on this.

If the players win games, do they lose them also?

Let's remember that only coaches are responsible for losses, not wins. Players are only responsible for wins, not losses?

Pay less attention to the words he's using and listen more to what he's saying.

It's the truth. A coach can call a perfect game and still lose if his players don't show up.

He's right. Coaches put the players in a place to succeed. I don't think Miles & crew were doing that.

exactly this. its hype for the recruits, a "we're built on you" kinda thing, nothing more.

This is what I was looking for, actually. The rant tends to disagree with this. That if the players screw up, it's not their fault.

This is him saying I know what I'm doing and calling will work if the players make it work. He's also saying he will do everything possible to have these players prepared to dominate in his offense. That's what I got anyway lol

Well Les Miles made a damn strong living off of players not plays so I tend to agree with him.

exactly. You need the players. Great coaching doesn't really win games so much as bad coaching loses games. In other words, a coach who doesn't put his players in positions to win the game can lose the game, but a good coach will put his players in the position to win but it takes players to win.

put another way. A bad coach is like sailing a boat with the anchor down. Hard to win like that. But all a good coach has to do is pull the anchor up and then it is up to the best sailboat to win the race.
