But, will this give universities in major market areas an advantage over universities in lower market areas? Something to think about when the NCAA sets rules regarding this. That being said, in Louisiana there's no doubt we will support our boys at LSU, and support them well!!!

That's the thing - they are getting rid of the rules.

By this stupid decision the NCAA has singlehandedly destroyed collegiate football.

There really wasn't a choice.

Well, so this will end amature sports. They might as well start another professional league. Just like the pro teams they will play from their back pockets and not for their school or state. Is why I never cared for professional sports. They should now have to pay for their scollarships. This will kill all football for me.

NCAA is being forced into this decision by California`s new law.and avoiding lawsuits.i believe athletes should get a modest salary, their room and board is paid for.enough money to buy street clothes take a girl out, phone small stuff.NCAA should remove itself from california schools.you give big bucks to kids who never had any is a disaster waiting to happen.Poorer schools will not be able to compete, everything changes ruins the game.

Exactly. REC or TAF can buy thousands of dollars of player apparel and merchandise, effectively functioning as an annual salary for the player.

This, specifically, is way overstated.

Right now an LSU football jersey costs $100. Think about where that $100 goes. You’ve got:
- Cost of the jersey from Nike
- Freight costs
- LSU licensing fee
- Retail markup

I wouldn’t expect the price of a “Burrow” jersey to go up significantly, as the alumni jerseys currently sell for the same price as generic jerseys with no name. So of that $100, how much do you think actually goes to the player? LSU and Nike’s cut are already likely 75%+. So $5? $10?

Point being this: if you’re wealthy enough to funnel thousands of dollars to players, you’re probably smart enough to find a way to do it without spending 10x that in the process.

The bulk of money won't be through apparel, you're right. It'll be autographs, camps, speaking fees, etc. All things that are hard to put a concrete value on.

The main reason these states are passing this is the potential tax revenue, of which they’ve been getting nothing in their eyes. They don’t really give a shite about the players.

What additional tax revenue are the states going to bring in?

Unless there is a cap, what’s to stop Phil Knight from putting Oregon players on Nike billboards or commercials for a million dollars a pop.

The fact that Nike is a publicly traded company, for starters.

Every dollar these players make will now be taxable income. Do you think they’re going to get paid and it not get taxed?

First off, even if the “worst case” scenario of boosters funneling a ton of money to athletes, you’re really talking about money that would have been used for donations to the universities being redirected. Considering that most universities with top-notch athletic programs are state schools, the states may actually lose money here.

Second, whatever income tax a state pulls in on a few hundred college athletes is a rounding error in the grand scheme of things.

The big markets will benefit bigtime unless they put a cap and even then it favors them.

Coaching will be at an even higher premium

No, it doesn’t. If they don’t cap this it’s going to be outrageous.

Even with a cap, it will still probably be outrageous

Jesus guys, they can't put in a cap, that's the whole purpose, they (schools through the association) shouldn't/can't be colluding, regulating and restricting trade.

What they are about to do, which they really have no choice is they are removing the cap from $0, generally speaking.
