With all due respect to Art , Jimmy Taylor was by far the toughest/meanest SOB to play for LSU or the Green Bay Packers.
There was a reason he was listed on pro football’s 11 meanest men.

Spencer Smith from Baton Rouge (Glen Oaks)
Legend has it that during 1977 Sun Bowl pre-game week festivities, Spencer and some of the Stanford players were in a bar competing (unofficially) in bar type games. Spencer grabbed a mug of beer, chugged it and then bit the mug and crunched it until he spit out glass pieces and a considerable amount of blood.
Also, Spencer was one of several guys barred from a pretty wild bar across the river for fighting. He cleaned up a fight mostly by himself after someone else started it. He was 16 and a high school JR. Later became a Parade All-American and should have been an all-SEC linebacker but McCLendon decided that he was too big to play LB and moved him to offensive guard. Never played much as OL line was a much too passive position for this aggressive, hitting machine.

Cantrelle was allegedly an enforcer for the Dixie Mafia on the MS Gulf Coast for quite some time.
I’ve heard stories I’ll not divulge here that are pretty extraordinary.
World Football league after that.
He's 70 years-old now.
He was a baaaaad man.
I have no stories to share here either.

had a conversation with cantrelles former teammate lonnie miles a few years back, said art was a great guy when he was not in a bar room

In Physics class, when Art was asked to prove the law of gravity, he threw the teacher out of the window.

Old Coach Fred Lindsay, who coached both, said Art was the toughest he'd seen. Said he was never a problem until he got drunk.
Fred was actually my grandfather, and he mentioned Cantrelle more than a few times. I think one of the stories he mentioned was the one about the guys that were going to shave him.

George Atiyeh (sp?) was one bad mofo.

I went to school with both Chris Dantin and Art Bird. I don't know much about Chris off the field, but Cantrelle lived up to every and all stories. He was a friend and I made sure to stay on that side. I will not comment on specifics.

Jim Taylor on the field, Artie on Highland Road.
Both were legit badasses you didn't want to piss off.

cantrelle was fun to watch; and you are right, he was one bass arse mofo. you definitely wanted to be on his side in a fight

I see Cantrelle all the time here in Biloxi. He and my older brother are the same age and went to high school together. He has the reputation on the coast of being the toughest dude ever around here. He has the strongest grip and will bring anyone that tries to out squeeze him in a handshake to their knees. He’s mellowed out a lot now, though. The stuff about being involved with the Dixie mafia isn’t true. He was a bookie for a while, shrimped a while, and now works at a seafood market.
