Back in the day,,,, Red Shirt was pretty much a given, as experienced players played 4 yrs and didn’t jump to the NFL after 3 !!!!

Shared time with another true freshman, Brandon Stewart. Stewart transferred to A&M after the season.

Tim Tebow was pretty good.
GOAT but he was a role player as a true Fr in '06 with Leak (who BTW was the Gator QB as a true Fr when they beat us in '03).
For us, Herb Tyler only started after Howard got hurt but he was solid as a true Fr in '95.

Tua during that NC game and trevor lawrence had a good freshman year from what I remember. Those two are what brought in the era of unrealistic expectations for freshman QB's IMO. As to Underwood, he looked legit to me for a freshman QB, but maybe there are better qb' s for cheaper? I haven't evaluated all the potentially available QB's in the NCAA but hopefully Kiffen's crew does.

Underwood may turn out to be great, but is he worth giving up a fourth of our budget?
If that’s the going rate, yes. Nuss took nearly a fourth of the budget this season.

I thought it was Todd Helton after Colquitt got hurt?
Posted on 12/12/25 at 10:52 am to ChestRockwell
It was, but Helton got hurt as well.

Tommy was a great QB for that era. I especially liked the way LSU rolled the USCe “black team” in the bowl game in Tommy’s senior year.

That was his soph yr ('87).

It sucked but that’s the rate. We aren’t getting a starter for $1M

Pretty much lit it up:
“ In his 2013 freshman year at Florida State, Jameis Winston had 4,057 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, completing 66.9% of his passes. He also achieved a 184.8 passer rating and led the team to an undefeated season and a national championship.”

Wasn’t a starter his freshman year.
Trevor Lawrence was pretty good.
Jalen Hurts wasn’t bad.
It also helps when there’s a good team around the true freshman. Clemson was stacked so was Alabama, not to mention the staff those guys had.
Michigan’s team and staff was mediocre at best. Not saying underwood is going to be the end all be all, but a good coaching staff and team around him definitely would accelerate his development.
