How so? From what I heard, he makes significant more money there, and would go virtually unnoticed here besides the $37k gold medalist get every 4 years.

US track and field would not let him compete when he was younger; that is when he started competing for Sweden, and they would not let his dad (a former world-class pole vaulter) coach him. Sweden would allow both, and since his mom is Swedish, he has dual citizenship, so he did that to start competing on the world stage. There was no money for him then, yet. I think he has stated that he chose to keep competing for Sweden in appreciation for them allowing him to compete at a younger age, and with his dad coaching him(I think USTAF has relented on that coaching policy since it archaic and a vestige of the amatuerism component of track and field which has ceased to exist for decades). I'm sure money probably did have an influence; he probably makes more money there, but a lot of those endorsements would follow him wherever he goes.

Us olympic qualification is based only on the us olympic trials. Have a bad day there because you are sick or something and you miss the Olympic team. Sweden does it based on world ranking or something, so it isn’t dependent on a single day.

I was a classmate of his uncle while his dad vaulted at Holy Cross. They were Americans, though.

No, the arrogant American coaches will not let his parents coach him.
arrogant?

The arrogant one is the person expecting his parents to be his team coaches while in the USA. If we let every gold medal winner have their parents as coaches it would be full on daddy ball here

Sorry you don’t get special treatment here and are like anyone else. That isn’t the USA fault. Mondo made his own decision, idiots trashing the USA over it is so damn played out

This is such a lame excuse - every other American Olympian manages. By that reasoning, if you’re sick or have a bad day at the Olympics, you don’t medal - so why even be an athlete? The very basis of athletic competition revolves around stepping up and getting it done when it counts.

And every American Olympic candidate / competitor complains about this rule. The only country world-wide to have it. It's just that not many, if any, have the opportunity Mondo has. He's been spending summers in Sweden with his grand parents, going back to his childhood days. This is not just an attempt to make money. As for his father wanting to coach him, again, the USOC has this rule & no other country's OC does. If it was all about money, he would not have attended, & competed in, a LSU uniform. He wanted to be on campus with his baseball playing brother. By not going to & competing under his Swedish citizen, he cost himself millions............plus, have you seen his Swedish girlfriend???

To each his own. For me personally, representing the USA still means something.

A Ukrainian pole vaulter back in the day broke the record 35 times

Sergey Bubka. His outdoor record was 6.14m. He has been very complementary and gets along well with Mondo. He’s actually Mondo‘s hero.
