Milam came in very highly rated. If not for his size, he probably wouldn't have made it to campus. He had a rough transition to college ball, but Jay consistently stuck with him throughout the fall and into the spring. I was pleasantly surprised with his emergence, but not shocked. Jay saw something in him, and we all got to witness it.

With that said, I don't think any decisions have been made yet on positions for Milam, Dickinson, and Braswell. I still like Dickinson or Braswell at SS/3B with Milam at 2B. But, I wouldn't say that I don't see a world in which Milam is the SS. All 3 are very versatile and capable infielders, especially in the middle. It will just come down to their comfort level at each position. I don't think any of them are really comfortable at 3B so that's really the position to watch.

Milam is not tall enough to play 3b. He will play SS.
I can see us having a completely different lineup for every game before SEC play though. So, who knows

What a story for that guy if he can go from basically nothing to starting shortstop for lsu.Lindsey.

Huh?

why do you have to be tall for 3B?

sadly it looks like Dickinson is a bit of a dud defensively, so you may have to hide him at 2B like you did with Dugas

It’s a position for giants like…..Tyler Hanover.

That's something else I thought about. We won a natty with Dugas at 2B with 1 arm. I'm sure Jay doesn't want to waste a Milam there if the analytics say you can get by otherwise. It's at least worth looking at.

I don't think Dickinson is a dud defensively, though. Maybe just a bit less versatile than Milam and Braswell. Just need to see where he's most comfy.

Before he came to LSU

He wasn’t a prospect if I remember correctly. Not supposed to be the guy last year. Amazing story

No, he was a big recruit but you are right in that he started as a true freshman and really came on second half of the season seemingly out of nowhere. Now starting a SS for the Tigers is pretty huge for an 18-19 yr old

Mostly need the reach for shots down the line, and a strong arm for the long throws.

He point blank said in the interview that Jay told him he’s playing on the left side this year

He's the best defensive 2B ever at LSU and I kinda hate giving him up at that spot. Like he's a perfect 2B.

Never seen a guy throw across his body like he does and is money with juice on it every single time.

But Braswell seemed to make a lot of routine throws for outs look pretty close last year….. so him doing that at third makes me nervous. At least that’s my initial reaction

Good thing a lot less balls get hit to third than SS. Jays just playing the avg’s

That's the alignment I would bet on. Braswell took 3b reps this Fall and this ensures all three are on the field. CJJ wants Dickinson's bat in the lineup (career .369 hitter with pop).

All 3 of them took reps at 3B in the fall and Jay said in his interview a few weeks ago that if Milam wouldn't have gotten hurt/sick that he would have been getting work mostly on the left side of the infield the last 2 weeks of fall.

This is the splits in the fall scrimmages:

Milam - (6) 2B, (4) SS, (1) 3B
Braswell - (1) 2B, (12) SS, (10) 3B
Dickinson - (7) 2B, (10) SS, (3) 3B

Other players that got looks in the infield

Hogg - (9) 2B, (5) SS, (3) 3B
Reaves - (9) 2B, (0) SS, (2) 3B
Ryan - (4) 2B, (12) SS, (2) 3B
Josh Pearson - (2) 2B, (0) SS, (2) 3B
John Pearson - (0) 2B, (0) SS, (14) 3B

Best ever? He is good, but let's not get carried away.

Todd Walker, Ryan Theriot, Warren Morris come to mind.

While the 3B profile, historically, was a big player with a big arm and bat, I don't think that is the mold anymore necessarily. That spot has to have a player with good hands and reflexes, strong arm, and most importantly be able to make a lot of plays on the run (choppers, bunts, etc) by throwing with different arm slots. Need to be really athletic in my opinion.

I tend to think height is more important for SS because range is so important.

Bregman moved to 3B at the pro level, and Houston went with the taller, longer players with range at SS (Correa, Pena)
