BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Demolition of the former OYO Hotel on Mead Road, estimated to cost over $1 million, will begin, despite a new hiccup: the building caught fire early Wednesday morning.
Mayor-President Sid Edwards voiced his frustration and determination to tear down the building, which he called “a place of drugs, prostitution, terrible crimes.” It is among a list of top 10 commercial properties facing redevelopment or demolition soon.
“If it was up to me, I’d blow every one of them damn properties up today,” Edwards said, then clarified that redevelopment should be the path to addressing blight when possible. The local business community could participate through partnerships to help address blight issues.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported that crews responded around 6:30 a.m. to the abandoned hotel, where fire was found on the second floor. Fire Chief Michael Kimble said a criminal investigation is ongoing.

Edwards said 12-15 individuals were found living in the former hotel during a walkthrough Tuesday. Of those people, he said two agreed to go into treatment for drug addiction and were taken to a facility.

They're still operating. This place has been abandoned for 2 years, and the owner couldn't be reached. Sid said "tear it down"

Every Oyo in America needs demolishing.

That Oyo was nothing but a cesspool of crime and needed to be demolished years ago.

Solves nothing. It’s actually a solid location and had a great layout. Degenerates didn’t come to Baton Rouge for the Oyo. Degenerates that went to Oyo will just go to a different hotel. The people are the issue.

1980's long before they took over the hotel industry.

I wonder if Lori Burgess was hot. She sounds hot.

Leave the homeless in there and blow it up. They’ll just find another place to destroy

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - East Washington Street in Baton Rouge has been changed to Lorri Burgess Avenue in honor of the city-parish’s first African American mayor pro tem.
Dozens of folks gathered at the Leo Butler Community Center for the unveiling of the new name and a celebration of her life and accomplishments.
Burgess served on the East Baton Rouge Metro Council for 12 years. She was also the director of the Sickle Cell Foundation.
Many people signed a petition to remove the former sign and replace it with the name, Lorri Burgess.

I take that Mead service road as a shortcut to get to the Lake Sherwood neighborhood a couple of times a month. And every time I pass that vacant hotel, there are multiple cars coming and going. Multiple cars parked in there. Seen cops in there before. It was clearly a vacant hotel and everyone who lives on that side of town clearly knew what was going on there.
