Why would Hampton put himself in the portal in the middle of the season? Apparently he isn't eligible to play for another school this year, so why not finish out the year and then transfer?

Is he still going to school? Is he still enrolled at LSU? If we get a new coach, does the new coach recruit him to return?

I'm pretty sure he withdrew from school. That's why he was off the LSUSports.net roster immediately and didn't participate in Spring football.

Probably wouldn't be happy there either.

Gotta feel for the guy leaving millions on the table and playing for a coach with one foot in retirement. I wish the best for him whatever he may do.

When he first hit the portal, I thought he would be playing for someone else, JUCO, smaller school, something. When I realized that he isn't even playing, I couldn't make sense of it. For his own personal career, sitting the bench at LSU would be better for his development than sitting at home. At least he would be practicing and have a hitting coach. He must have been pretty upset to just sit home. So I was thinking, new coach next year, maybe Gio and Dugas gone, maybe he comes back. After Arik Gilbert, I will believe anything.

He should have stayed for football with his size.

He was Injured last year but played well in 2019.

If he’s still interested in a baseball or football career, rest assured he isn’t just sitting at home.

Another player with all the material that Paul couldn’t develop. He was told he couldn’t play at LSU because there was to much talent. Good lord get rid of Mainieri now!

One of Mainieri’s biggest mistakes this season. Who tells an Uber talented kid that.

Not what he said. He told him that he was behind some of the other players which makes sense because they played in the fall while he was focusing on football and the starting outfield was relatively set with Crews, Gio (pre injury) and Dugas/Beloso in left/DH your most experienced hitters coming into the season.

If Hampton would have stuck it out for a couple more weeks he may be the starting center fielder or DH right now.

Entering the portal is the trigger that allows other schools to contact him.

I’m not a Paul apologist but you can’t really blame him here...Hampton missed all of summer and fall and Paul couldn’t promise he’d play in front of guys who had been putting in the work while Hampton was in FB. I love multi-sport athletes but unfortunately nowadays if you’re not committed to one sport year-round then you’re falling behind.

I'd bet the vast majority of our freshman and sophomore revenue-sport athletes are in all online classes. He probably didn't have to withdraw to go home.

That makes more sense.

People forget that in his first year Hampton worked his way up to the starting lineup and was making good progress despite coming out late after the great 2019 championship run.

Getting hurt and then Covid prevented what could have been a good freshman year fir Hampton.

After that he went back to football only to return to a more crowded outfield situation with Crews and Dugas there now. Gio getting hurt could have been his chance, but Mainieri had others ahead of him and he really didn’t get a shot then.

The question in my mind is why was he behind Bianco, Drost and Sanford. Was he doing poor in preseason camp because of the injury and he was late again?

Paul went way further than just telling him he’d have to earn his spot…
