Don't believe everything you hear or read. No school wants it known that they were turned down by a coach.
On the other side, it has to be the right fit. Sometimes its not about money, sometimes its not about being the HC, some may just want to be a OC or DC. Too many things in place. You have to have the full backing of the higher ups. Then some coaches will get input from other coaches/friends on as to take/not take a job.
For Les a # of things fell into place, too many things going on.

and probably offered 80% of what it would take to get Miles to come to Michigan.
Which is a salary probably that was double what they offered Hoke. Michigan seemed to be on the fence on both but one candidate would've come to UM for box of crackers and a case of beer.

Jordy reported this morning Michigan offered Miles $1 more than his current contract at LSU. Miles turned it down. Did they really want him? I think it'd be pretty dumb to make an offer like that simply out of courtesy and have it backfire by being accepted.

I dearly love LSU but we were probably suckered into offering the contract extension.

Dude, Tangerine read on a UM board that no offer was made and that they only talked to him to be nice. So it MUST be true!
Posted on 1/13/11 at 8:19 am to LSUTANGERINE
This is one of Tangerine's dumber posts, and that's a pretty high bar to clear. Michigan gtains literally nothing by interviewing Miles so publicly and then getting rejected.d In fact, quite the opposite. If they wanted to hire Hoke, they couould have done so a week ago.
If the rumors that Carr and Miles hate each other are true, and I see no reason why they aren't, then it makes even less sense for Michigan to give Miles negotiating leverage at his job.
I don't think Miles was officially "offered" in order to save face. You only officially offer when you know it will be accepted. but they certainly came down to interview Miles to take the job. a courtesy interview is done discreetly on the phone. It makes absolutely no sense for UM to get publicly rejected by its top two candidates, and they certainly didn't plan to do that.
Oh, get over your LSU obsession. It is the height of hypocrisy for a USC fan to be trolling on an LSU board for several YEARS, and then have the audacity to claim we are obsessed with USC. check out whose board your on. You're obsessed with us, not vice versa.

quote:The new contract is for 7 years but the guarantee is still $18.75M for the first two years of the contract. In year 3 it goes down to $15M and then reduces by $3.75M every year after that.
I'd be fine with Miles getting a 5 year contract at his current salary with it guaranteed, thus his original $18.75M buyout.
quote:I am not sure where you are getting this from but it is not what I have heard. Link?
To essentially guarantee him another $7.5 Million on top of that is utter pathetic.
quote:Again, the total amount of the contract is not guaranteed... only the $18.75M that was in the original contract. Also, the automatic rollover was taken out of the contract.
Les could go 0-12 next year and he's still guaranteed basically $22.5 million dollars.

quote:Actually, the contract extension was a good thing for LSU. The previous contract had an automatic roll-over that kept adding years on the back end of the deal. This new contract is for 7 years. I know many people said the roll-over was at the discretion of the LSU AD but that language was vague and could have been argued in a contract dispute. In the new contract, Les gave up the automatic roll and LSU gave him two extra years up front. That's called a compromise. Also, they added in some bonus money for winning the SEC West, SEC Championship, BCS Bowl and BCS Championship.
I dearly love LSU but we were probably suckered into offering the contract extension.

I do not know about "having their man already"...
but
1) no one talks to, interviews, discusses a job...call it what you want, unless HE is interested....and this is TWICE in a short period of time.
2)as many of us have done..when we have not been offered a job we wanted OR we could not come to terms, we default to the SAVE FACE position..
i.e. "I did not really want it " quote, or
"I decided I liked where I am better"
it's human nature...and the smart thing.
It is also in Michigan's best interest to build-up and/or to allow Miles to keep his stature.
...is there any possibility that Miles decided he was better off at LSU, of course..but I see it as the least likely situation.
..has nothing to do with LSU not being a better place than Michigan, it is, but Miles is a Michigan guy..no matter what he says.
It seems to me that Michigan means more to Miles, than Miles means to Michigan...so LSU it is.
Now, I have no problems with Miles, I have problems with some of Miles' decisions
i.e.
co defensive coordinators fiasco-seems fixed
lack of QB development- to be fixed
clock management-getting better
"playing" discipline-too many penalties still needs fixing
mediocre/predictable offense with SEC opponents
however,
ALL these things are somewhat easy to fix with the right personnel on board...and it appears as if movement is being made in that direction which could mean a SUPER year for LSU coming up.
fixing these problems will allow Miles to really shine where he is best- RECRUITING and RELATIONSHIPS.

...Chris Landry is a self promoting tool with an extremely inflated opinion of himself....he's covering his azz and association with "Pelican Sports" and their "scoop" of Miles-to-Michigan fail...I understand he's a Lloyd Carr guy, and that whole group, and UM , covering their butts from embarrassment ...

It's funny that you make a big deal about LSU fans replying with posts regarding USC. But what does it say about you that you are registered on an LSU board.
So who is really giving who the attention here?

Probably right.
No way Michigan was going to give Miles, or anyone, the kind of $$ they needed to leave LSU. And they will not pay the coordinators, which LSU does.
They asked him what it would take, and politely said they couldn't do that.
Miles used it to buy a few more years.
Michigan thinks it should be a privilege for any "Michigan Man" to coach their team, and he should't ask for too much money.
This is why Hoke, an otherwise good coach, will fail at UofM. Michigan is not really ready to win yet.
