Mainieri says he underestimated the strength of the conference these days

"Being a part of the SEC for so many years at LSU, Mainieri knew how difficult the league was. At least he thought he did
“I had just underestimated the strength of the conference and how much better the conference has gotten in the last couple of years,” he said. “The players are so much bigger and stronger and more experienced, older. We just have not been able to match up in some cases with them.”

We all knew maneri thought the ideal baseball prospect was 5'8 150 lbs. Looks like he forgot weight training now exists in high schools. Sad to see him go out this way!

Whoever thought hiring Maineri at South Carolina is a good idea needs to be fired asap

Has the league changed that drastically in 3 years?

They're wearing short pants and oven mitts now, too, coach.

Totally separate from hiring Jay Johnson, the decision to part ways with Paul is one of Woodward's most underrated and unheralded moves.

He’s a horrible coach now
Should have retired after he won the natty at LSU
He eroded LSU fan expectations the longer he stayed.
He took LSU from a team that was expected to be in Omaha every year to a team where fans accepted only going to Omaha every 3-4 years.

The criticism of him was he always favored the shorter, smaller type players. LOL

He's the one that brought in Jared Jones and Ethan Frey.
ETA: Regardless, his comments are complete bullshite. Even if he underestimated things, he had several assistant coaches who were not retired for the last 3 years.
Maybe you're just not getting it done Paul.

Bruh. You can't say that to the media.

The transfer portal has drastically changed the ability to plug holes you think you have, for sure
The problem for Mainieri is they had a pretty bad portal haul to go along with a pretty bad freshman class as well. Now he had no real input on the freshman class obviously, but the weak portal haul certainly was a lot on him.
South Carolina is really lacking on the talent end and he doesnt have the talent influx to fix that thus far, and their freshman class coming in for next season is also still pretty weak.
So basically he better go balls to the wall in this next portal cycle and hit it big because thats about the only way South Carolina will be competitive again in the SEC next season.

Kind of. Jay emphasizes all the time how much being older helps and plugging in these older experienced transfers. You have to be a freaking stud to even get recruited here these days as a freshman. And Jay hit on those this year with Curiel and Evans.
You flat out have to have those older stronger experienced guys to even match up. A team of all true freshmen and sophomores would get boat raced.

Yes college baseball and all of college athletics has changed greatly.
Because of the new transfer rules and NIL more players are going college, players are migrating to the larger programs and the top programs are flush with talent.

Probably not. But, doesn't really matter because his timeline is further back than 3 years. He lost touch with the league before that.

Reckon how much more of this he can take? He probably should re-retire at season’s end.

He took over a program that players should be migrating to.
If they aren't, whose fault is that?

Added two more good teams plus the portal and NIL. It's actually kinda sad. If he just wanted to coach again he shouldn't have come back to the only pressure cooker conference in the sport.

He looked checked out during the Clemson series. And they hadn't even reached SEC play by then.

Yeah not knowing that going in was pretty silly
