Fifteen players transferred out of the Georgia football program this offseason. Just four players transferred into Georgia. Kirby Smart and Georgia continue to build the roster via recruiting and development. The Bulldogs have the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class of 2024. Georgia does not rely on incoming transfers as much as other programs.

We have more transfers starting for LSU this season than Georgia has total transfers coming in for 2023 season.

There's more bang for the buck now in working the portal than recruiting 18yo kids with no college games. Walker Howard and Arik Gilbert come to mind.

And while he was a graduate transfer months before the portal officially started, the one and only Joseph Lee Burrow is the trump card I'll play to support this argument.

Do you not realize LSU would of been in rebuild mode until like 2026 without the portal THIS!!!! BK had, what, 34 scholarship players when he took over?

This!
Kelly had to do a complete roster overhaul, talking to my friends in the coaching profession, everyone I talked with said the job shouldn’t have been done this quickly. But everywhere he’s been, he’s done this, to think we had a WR playing QB, in a bowl game!

It’s not much different than the draft vs free agency. However, free agency is how new coaches can quickly turn a team around. Drafting players is great and more affordable, but takes years and requires development.

Kelly is doing exactly what he needs to do.

Georgia might be an outlier but they are showing you the blueprint on how to compete for the sec and a NC each year.

I do think they are an outlier but only in the sense that Kirby has been absolutely destroying it in recruiting. Not only signing highly ranked kids, but developing them (especially on defense) into a cohesive, deep team.

I don't mind the portal in the way we are utilizing it as we pretty much had too, but I still believe it is a high school recruit driven game when it gets down to making the playoffs year and year out.

Interesting take though from previous poster about Kelly being a better talent evaluator with portal kids than he is at landing high school kids. Time will tell in the next two recruiting classes on how this plays out.

Than why has the team who won the last 2 NC not use the portal

The sample size is incredibly small

This is the correct answer. In order to win, you need players now. We clearly had no secondary in place last year when he came in, which is why Kelly had to hit the portal hard there. That's continued because those guys played well, and then declared for the draft.

It would be nice if every recruit was like Harold Perkins, but that isn't the case. You have to figure a couple years to develop before they make an impact. If we didn't have the transfer portal, you'd still be seeing this team try to get to 500 next year.

Using the portal is going to be key for a lot of teams. But you can’t overhaul your roster every year and think it’s a good strategy.

the portal should be treated as lagniappe.

it's a place to fill unexpected/immediate holes.

Is it just me or we haven’t heard his name a lot and Jalen Lee? And I listen to sports talk every day. Jefferson was a straight up beast at WVU

To be fair some of the transfers only had 1 year of college under their belt so it's like a kid red shirting.

There are some teams we arent going to be able to keep up with as far as NIL funds go. We seem to get more bang for the buck in the transfer portal where we can get players who have already proven they can play on this level at a high level.

We still need good recruiting classes but its not the end all be all that it use to be.

False. O line only has one transfer starting. If Heard takes over at ROT, then that would make 0 transfer starters.
