Found this interesting given the flak our kickoffs have gotten.

I guess when you kick OOB it's 0 yds per return, no?

We should just keep kicking the ball out of bounds so we can give up 0.0 yards per return.
Damn beat me to it Fishhead

Doing good, but I would imagine it's a very small sample compared to most teams that kickoff much more?
Also, as other pointed out I wonder if the OOB kicks are helping the avg.

This is sad if we are excited about this.

considering the struggles we had last year with it, why wouldn't we?

That's happened what, twice? And I'll never understand why some of you are even fans. You are miserable and hate when others try to be positive.

The plan for kickoffs makes sense. You see a lot of NFL teams doing it now. When a touchback comes out to the 25, it's worth it to take a few risks. The problem is we have a college kicker trying directional kicks while the NFL has professionals. I really don't fault the strategy at all. If the ball is kicked well into the corner, they will get to the 15 yard line, which is extremely difficult starting field position. If it's kicked out of bounds, they get 10 more yards than they would on a touchback. I know this brings in the chance for a TD return, but when the group is disciplined, this is very unlikely. Les has tons of things to bash him on, but I don't think kickoff strategy is one of them.

From the earlier thread....
In looking at kickoff coverage this year, LSU ranks 4th in the country in return average at 13.8 yards. There have been 2 penalties for kicks out of bounds, and 2 touchbacks. Of the other 10 kickoffs, the best starting field position was the 27. Average starting position is the 18.5. Factoring the penalties and touchbacks in, average is the 21-22 yard line.
Also, touchbacks and OOB's aren't in the OP's stat

I just think this is a very redundant stat. The kind that should wait until every team plays 8-9 games.
Right now, Georgia Southern has the #3 defense in the country...
ETA: GA Southern is actually tied with Toledo, Baylor, and Washington at #3.

Sounds like its time to give Peveto another raise and an extension.

Yards per return on kickoffs is a completely useless stat. What if you sky kick it to the 15 yard line and tackle them 10 yards later every time? That's a starting field position of the 25 yard line, which is the same as kicking it through the end zone every play...but 10 yards per return looks fantastic
Average starting field position on kickoffs for the opposing team is WAY more relevant. It takes into account touchbacks, kicks out of bounds...and where the guy actually kicks it to in addition to the return, all pretty important measures outside of just how far does a returner run with the ball regardless of where it's kicked.

First off, look up the definition of redundant.
Second, the article was written and I posted this because it's a topic of conversation by fans who are upset at our kickoffs.

It may be useless but the examples that you provide are not consistent with our kickoffs, the kick coverage when the ball is kicked right at the goal line has been excellent, we have had a couple go out of bounds but we aren't sky kicking them at the 15

Per the Google:
Redundant - not or no longer needed or useful; superfluous.
But hey, nice try!
