Which is why all of us Old Timers hate Notre Dame to this day

Precisely - I remember that season very well. Still pissed off at everyone involved. Neither ND or TU could have matched up with LSU that year.

Two reasons: a coaching staff asleep at the wheel. They refused the sure thing Sugar Bowl because of a “gentleman’s handshake” from the Cotton Bowl to play Texas. In the meantime ND crept into the picture, and pushed us out. Ole Miss had Archie and the Bowl didn’t want a rematch. Harrah’s in Vegas had only two teams that year that would have been favored against Texas in the Cotton Bowl: Penn State @ 1.0 and LSU @ 2.5.

Ironically, in 1970 LSU travelled to South Bend to play Notre Dame and lost 3-0. The following year ND came to Baton Rouge and were trounced in revenge game for LSU. Both games 1969 and 1970 were huge events at that time.

Agree totally but he was not on the ‘69 team.

I saw Cantrelle in action at the Pastime Lounge on the pin ball machines. For you youngsters, the machines were in every bar and they were frequented by people that wanted some gambling action. I was one of them, and so was AC. They weren't the flipper kind, but machines that could be hit to move the balls into the holes desired. Enough said

Once ND announced they were waving their bowl ban, every bowl in America wanted them. Cotton had the advantage cause they had #1 team. Texas was very good in 1968 and won the HUGE game vs Ark (1 vs 2) in Fayetteville in ‘69. Nixon named them NC after that game, much to the chagrin to Paterno & Penn St who were undefeated.

Warren Capone was a beast, but he was a freshman in 1969 and freshmen did not play with the varsity then.

Aint but one way to settle this and its by getting all of the players from the Texas, ND, and LSU teams from 69' and have them play a round robin tournament

There was a story about him that I always heard that illustrated how much of a badass Art Cantrelle was.

typically there's an element on our teams, usually defense, that are so badass/thuggish that even coaches are intimidated to be around, particularly if alone, Cantrelle was a few years before my time but when I was at LSU, our version would have been George Atiyeh, I've seen firsthand some of his charades as I was a bartender in a couple of places he liked to terrorize he was like Mongo, "oh no, don't shoot him, you'll only make him mad"

I go back to tall Paul. I have always thought that the 1969 team was the best. I am still bitter about what Notre Dame did that year. They screwed us. If they had announced that they would play in bowls prior to LSU being asked to go to the Cotton Bowl, it would be a different thing. But they screwed us out of any bowl by the way they did it. Andy Hamilton showed them a thing or two a few years later.

Go to Hell Notre Dame go to hell

Thinking of that team brings back memories. It was just the second year I followed LSU.

It was an outstanding team, with just a tough close loss to Ole Miss.

The Tigers certainly deserved to be playing in one of the top bowls that season and as mentioned above, Notre Dame decided to play in its first bowl ever that year at a very late date. Thus, LSU was very unfortunate the way things worked out with the bowls.

got to looking at that 1969 Texas team and was dumbfounded by what I saw. Texas played two teams with a winning record in 1969.

One of the great disconnects when looking at the past is people using current standards and mores to judge the past. Texas was undefeated and beat 3 teams in the final top 10. (Btw looks like we only beat 1 ranked team, so what are you bitching about?)

Also LSU did not win the SEC, if we had played and beaten Texas, Penn St wins the AP title. Texas had already won the UPI (coaches poll) they did not start naming a NC after the bowls until 1974

LSU's rushing defense gave up 349 yds. in ten games and Texas was a wishbone team. Do you think UT really wanted that match up?
