LSU Football In 1969. Why Did We Not Play For The NC?

Need a little insight from some of our older posters in here. I was talking to an older gentleman from out west that said the 1969 Texas team that won the NC should have been playing LSU and not Notre Dame. So I looked up the records and we were 9-1 and ND was I believe 8-1-1. My immediate reaction was Notre Dame was beloved or hated by the national media. Naturally a bigger national audience in the matchup for the TV viewing audience.

I got to looking at that 1969 Texas team and was dumbfounded by what I saw. Texas played two teams with a winning record in 1969. OU was 6-4 and Arkansas was 9-2. Eight of their opponents did not have a winning season. Total opponents record was 39-62. I don’t think going undefeated against the likes of a 1-9 Navy, 3-7 Rice, 3-7 SMU, 0-10 Baylor, 4-6 TCU, 3-7 A&M, should automatically make a team worthy of playing for a national championship. LSU lost to Ole Miss by 3 points and played a Much tougher schedule. It’s very well possible LSU would have went right on over there and curb stomped Texas.

Notre Dame didn’t even play in bowls games up to that point dating back to 1925. I’m still scratching my head how a 1969 Texas Longhorn team was rewarded the #1 ranking after beating ND by 5 points essentially in a home game in Dallas.

Genius poster - ESPN didn’t exist in 1969.

So ND took the game to spite us is what I understand you are saying? Looking at that Texas schedule it’s a game we very well could have won. Certainly would have defined our coaches perception in a more positive light.

And, that, right there, is your answer. ND decided to end their self-imposed bowl ban at the last minute and the Cotton Bowl leapt at the chance to take them, leaving LSU out in the cold.

Team that plays a weak schedule doesn’t exclude them from consideration

My dad was on that team. Notre Dame ended their “no bowl” policy and were picked over LSU.

The team expected to get the bowl invitation to play Texas. The seniors voted to not play in any other bowl that year.

The players got a trophy. I’ll try and link a picture.

This is my favorite trophy that my dad got from LSU. They got screwed.

My recollection is that we thought we were going to the Cotton Bowl to play UT. So did everyone else, so all of the major bowls lined up other matches.
Secretly, the Cotton Bowl had been negotiating with ND. I’m not sure which party contacted the other to start it, but I think ND contacted the Cotton Bowl and said that they’d break their self-imposed bowl ban if they were invited (they thought bowl games interfered with academics too much). It wasn’t announced until all the other bowls were announced and LSU was left out in the cold.
The Bluebonnet Bowl offered, but a very disappointed LSU team voted not to play a bowl game.
Probably Cholly Mac’s best team. Great, suffocating defense, as you’d expect, with Art Cantrelle at TB.
And that’s why we hate ND.

I totally get it. You play who is on your schedule. Looking into this if I were a national sports writer only playing two teams with a winning record would have come up in my articles I wrote. OU was 6-4. Texas beat some awful teams that year. Like the perfect storm occurred to run the regular season table.

LSU didn't give up a rushing touchdown that year and only 345 rushing yards for the season. Would have been a great match up with Texas running the wishbone. I was a freshman at LSU in 1969. Still my favorite team after the 2019 team.

Bert Jones told me Cantrelle was the meanest dude to ever play football at LSU. Said the cops were even scared of him.

I’d have to think Texas had influence over who the Cotton Bowl offered. Not saying Texas was afraid to play us but I’d be willing to bet UT saw an easier path to victory by playing ND.

Me too! Now I dislike both ND and Texas even more than I normally do which is saying a lot.

That’s awesome. I bet your father was not happy. I’d be bitter over this. I’m bitter now after learning this. I was only 3 months old when they played that NC game in Dallas.
