And will finish in the top 10. Purely from an outside perspective, isn’t that beating expectations?

Plus, most of the "experts" selected LSU as the team most-likely to end up out of the rankings due to being overrated. I would venture a guess that those guys would have placed us somewhere between 28-35.

We blew past all expectations. 2019 was supposed to be our year that this team might do something and still might be. Florida, Auburn, Arkansas and A&M comes to our house while we travel to Bama, Miss State and OM.

With more depth at QB, WR, RB, CB, OL, DL, TE and a better pass rush without the injuries we sustained this year it should be a completely different offseason and team next year for the better. It'll be Steves second year as OC with Burrow coming back and the entire O gaining more confidence in each other with some expansion, hopefully in RZ TD efficiency. If we see the sacks go up, so will the TOs. If the TD ratio goes up in the RZ then this team could be 12-1 and compete with the red team @ their place.

If the S&C team grabs a hold of this OL/DL in the offseason and makes sure that they work hard then we could see a real change in the quality of depth we have. Even if the depth doesn't grow all that much we should still have a better rotation at the LOS. It would do wonders if they got a hold of them all and worked their butts off though.

I rather not see pictures of them eating this year but of them running sleds, the levy with weights, pushing/pulling cars, flipping tires and in the heat as much as possible. When I see those things strictly as a LOS group then I'll be excited. Honestly they would all benefit from a really hard offseason workout routine.

it’s not that it didn’t exceed expectations in some areas. It did such as win total.
It was the fact that expectations that are set before a season are based on the previous season for the teams on your schedule such as Miami, AU and even UGA. All three of those teams that were the signature wins far from met expectations given the fact that Miami - a Top 10 ranked team didn’t even break the Top 30. AU another Top 10 preseason team was lucky to break the Top 25. And UGA was exposed for what they were - a team that had one good win against a questionable UF team at a neutral site.
UF would be a team that EXCEEDED expectations given the fact that they returned a terrible QB and had a first year coach. Remarkable job.
TAMU exceeded expectations given the fact that they had a very good scoring defense.
The three teams that played a Bend but don’t break style exposed LSU for what they were - a decent team between the 20’s but could score for shite.
The offense didn’t come anywhere near meeting expectations. They were as bad as any team the last 5 years and worse than last year.
Losing to UF and TAMU are inexcusable losses considering the above mentioned facts.

I recall Tom Luginbill citing LSU as over-ranked at #25.

It was shocking to me as I thought 10-11 wins was possible.

Not even top-25, Tom?

Geez.

But wouldn’t this mean that LSU’s lost to Florida is not as bad as it seemed at the time. If you are going to try and discredit LSU’s wins against Miami and Auburn because they were not as good as we thought then I believe you should not be as harsh on LSU losing to Florida because they were better than we thought. It’s still a loss and it’s not good but it’s not as bad as it was when it happened.

I dont think that's an accurate assessment as some teams turned out to be busts this year that were expected to finish top 10.

My metric is, are we beating the teams we're suppose to and are we fixing what's not working.

UF loss and A&M loss makes me say no, we are not beating who we should be beating.

Our terrible offensive strategy and lack of fundamentals (WRs dropping the football, lack of O line development, etc)lasted well throughout the entire season, so we didnt fix what wasnt working.

Credit where credit is due, we did a helluva job beating the Dawgs, so that gives me hope.

We finished 9-3 and so no, that isn't beating the expectation. Expectations are compete fro division title and we have to beat the west teams to do that.

We did lose the game - scoreboard - but

Florida - came down to last series
aTm - act of God

I see teams losing games like this often and it can't be explained merely by saying bad coaching - breaks fall against you - aTm

Urban needed a act of God at OSU vs Maryland - it's football

Alabama beat our brains in

Gators / aTm - Gators at home playing with their hair on fire - Tebow day !!!

atm - I am trying to forget this game and will never watch the replay

They were predicted to end up outside of the top 25 because of the schedule. Which wasn’t as difficult as “experts” thought.

What else matters? LSU can only play the games that are scheduled, and nearly everyone thought LSU was a barely .500 team.

It was the fact that expectations that are set before a season are based on the previous season for the teams on your schedule

That is only partially correct. They are also set by what LSU did the previous season. There were a lot of people predicting Coach O would be fired mid-season.

quote:

UF would be a team that EXCEEDED expectations given the fact that they returned a terrible QB and had a first year coach.

What about the fact that LSU had NO starters returning in the backfield and all of our starting WRs were gone? We also lost two starters to off-the-field idiocy.

We can play this game all day. It's not like LSU went into the season with a loaded roster. We had question marks on both lines, at QB, at RB, and at WR.

This coming season, expectations will be much higher, because we return a shite-ton of folks on both sides of the ball.

ETA: Here are a few of your posts from before the season.

quote:

UGa will be much improved from year 1 to 2 and have more talent than this LSU defense. You can’t say shite like this to try to spin the inevitable - 7-5 at best.

quote:

The line is a joke and it will be the same old shite.

quote:

What I’m tired of people like you trying to pump up others on the inevitable - a gigantic heap of dog shite that is the football program at the hands of this proverbial loser.

quote:

7-5 per the analyst. Why? Miami - loss MSU - loss AU - loss Bama - loss TAMU - loss Once all those early losses sink in it could mean a hell of a lot more because the team will lose faith. Hope and prayers won’t save the season.

quote:

Feel sorry for what is about to happen to our recruiting. Feel sorry for those kids who deserve better than what we are giving them because of what our administration and their egos allowed to happen.

How's recruiting going again?

Oh, and this next one has to be one of my favorites.

quote:

I want LSU to run the table and fly anothe flag mo e than anything. NOTHING would make me happier. I also support this staff financially as I have since the mid 70’s. If my money isn’t a testament to a team what is? I hope he proves me 100% wrong. I just can see the inevitable and don’t understand why we need to blindly roll with someone who we know has a far greater chance of failure than success. Who even has proved to be worse than the previous guy.

Face it. You hate Coach O, and will never give him credit for anything. The team exceeded your own expectations, yet you continue to crap on it. If you can't see that LSU is trending up, then I believe you are being deliberately obtuse.

In a year when pretty much everyone wrote off LSU because of all the question marks surrounding the team going into the season, you should be happy that we won 10 games. I didn't say satisfied, because we didn't bring home any hardware. Still, that's no reason to talk down the season.

So the solution is to go into every season with low expectations and then it will seem like we over-achieved?

rankings don't really matter.

For a program like ours, the goal should be to be seriously in the hunt to win the West, get to Atlanta, and have a shot at the playoffs.

Finishing 5-3 in the SEC (3rd in the West) is unacceptable, regardless of where we finish in some silly poll.

the experts also thought we had a killer schedule, but Miami and Auburn ended up with 6 and 5 losses, respectively.

And other than the UGA win (which was excellent), our best P5 win was Miss State at home, and they ended up with 5 losses.

The OP's point still remains. Even with those teams underperforming, LSU still performed better than expectations. We can only play the teams on the schedule, and LSU won 10 out of 13.

But the Florida game on the road ended up being against a tougher team than it was though to be before the season so I would say that cancels out one of those two.

I’ll never forget Greg McElroy and Taylor Zarzor saying LSU was ranked too high at #25 when the first AP poll came out, and that South Carolina should be in that spot. It fired me up because I knew LSU was going to be better, and I was very confident in a win versus Miami.

Three weeks later they both apologized to LSU and it’s fans. It was glorious.
