Alabama 2020 won a "title" in an illegitimate season. How would anybody know they would have won one under normal circumstances, much less beat the greatest college football team of all time?

This is 100 % the correct analogy and it's not even arguable. That Gump 'national championship" will forever have an asterisk by it and for good reason.
2019 Tigers vs 2020 Gumps would have resulted in the the same outcome, with the final margin of victory much larger.

Haha. Bama 2020 was a great team with an awesome offense, but it's not much of a comparison with Covid, etc. Bama beat a total of 6 winning teams. And because of Covid, the best team they beat had 9 wins (an unimpressive aTm team). They had to eek out a 52-46 W against 8-4 Florida in the SECCG. And they had to beat a team with just 7 wins in the NC (a team missing 13 players including 2 starting D-linemen and two kickers).
2019 LSU beat 11 bowl teams (5 of the final top 8 and 7 of the final top 25 which was a record). They beat the #1 defense in the nation twice (averaging 39 ppg against them). They snapped two 29-game streaks with Bama's home winning streak and then undefeated defending national champ Clemson's winning streak. LSU blasted everyone in the post-season and set a playoff record with 105 points in two games. Toward the end of the season, LSU was untouchable and proved it.
