Louisiana Surgeon General Ralph Abraham has put forward a solution to address LSU’s reluctance to bring its live tiger mascot to football games: Get a second tiger.

Reviving the tradition of bringing LSU’s live mascot, Mike the Tiger, has been a pet project of Gov. Jeff Landry and Abraham, who have led ongoing negotiations with LSU’s veterinary schools for several weeks, according to a state lawmaker involved in the talks.

In an interview Thursday, Abraham said he would support getting a second tiger “if that’s what it takes.”

Abraham, who earned his bachelor’s, veterinarian and medical degrees from LSU, said he believed university alumni could be counted on to fund a second habitat for the new tiger, which he thinks should be a cub that he recommends naming “Mikey.”

quote:

Earlier this month, LSU’s veterinary school spokeswoman Ginger Guttner said the institution “is not in discussions to bring Mike to any games this season.”

Mike VII, an 8-year-old tiger who became LSU’s official mascot in 2017, has never attended a football game. Previous tigers have been placed in a trailer and taken to the sidelines of home games, and some have even traveled to away games. The university announced it would stop the tradition when it adopted Mike VII as a cub.

Guttner said Mike VI had adverse reactions to visual and auditory stimuli that were part of the pre-game festivities and became resistant to getting into a trailer cage to attend the game. His final appearance in Tiger Stadium was for the LSU-McNeese game in 2015, which was canceled because of lightning. Mike VI did not attend any games in 2014.

However, these practical concerns did not end the conversations for Landry’s administration. Rep. Wayne McMahen, R-Minden, a veterinarian who was included in discussions about Mike, tossed around the idea of getting a second tiger in an interview earlier this month — a suggestion that may have taken hold.

“If you had a young tiger — and that’s one of the things I told the governor — you know, you had a young tiger that was trained to handle those situations. But to take a middle-aged tiger that has been captive in a certain way … I think it’d be a struggle,” McMahen said at the time.

Spokespeople for Landry and LSU have not responded immediately to requests for comment.

These guys should worry about actual issues affecting the state and less about putting a fricking animal into TS. The fact that people are still trying to maneuver this situation is insane. It's been nearly a decade since a Mike was last in the stadium.

Landry just here trying to put his thumb on hot button issues that he thinks will garner re-election: see him wanting the team on the sideline for national anthem and this bullshite

He's hoping for a Trump win and is angling for a position in that admin. He could give 2 fricks about being the LA governor

Know it all bitches on this website:
“It will never happen, it’s time to stop talking about it.”

Once it starts happening..
“This is such a stupid thing to worry about.. blah blah blah”

Y’all need to get the sticks out of your asses and be glad that there is at least an effort to bring back one of our traditions in this era of completely watered down collegiate athletics.

When even fans are yawning at this… the whole political system is fricked. They can all get fricked. Nobody cares anymore about a frickjng tigers in the stadium. We have serious issues to tackle that matter.

Opening up the Indian Mounds will be his next concern.

Nowhere in that quote does it say it's happening. It's a bunch of blowhards who don't actually have any idea about the situation trying to get re-elected/gain higher office/appease some big donor constituents.

They note that they agreed to cease the practice when they got Mike VII. I highly doubt they will jeopardize the ability to have a tiger on campus just to bring him into the stadium a few Saturdays a month

Who are they doing this for? This website is full of the craziest LSU fans and even here the VAST majority is against making the Tiger attend games.

Everyone hates Landry because he likes LSU, loves god, education in the state is improving and crime is reducing in New Orleans.

How dare him want to bring back a badass tradition that a bunch of soft liberal snowflakes bent the knee to lose.

No I'd rather not be glad. Their effort should be on improving this state, not bringing back questionable traditions that no one is asking for.

Geeze! How stupid can the governor and Abraham be? Higher Ed in LA is facing a 2025 $450 million state budget cut but he wants LSUAD to support TWO mascots.

Fans need to quit pining for the old days. Dragging a live Tiger around TS for 30 minutes 7 times a year is absurd and always was, IMO. And I have been going to games since 1960.

Hard to believe Landry has only been governor for 9 months. Already tackling years of worthless nonsense that no one asked for.

Thats the thing. I don't think fans are pining for this. Sure you get a few idiots that support it but not in any large number. The governor is extremely out of touch with reality.

How dare him

Who needs him to worry about things like education where someone might learn grammar?

What a retarded statement.
