Bama runs a traditional 3-4 2 gap scheme that relies on size up front. At Wisky, Aranda ran a 3-4 1 gap scheme that is attacked based and uses speed and athleticism up front to attack and be disruptive.

Finally an informative post.

We dont have the personnel for a 3-4. The only DE we have that can drop into coverage and not get exposed is Key. If you have a lb in the 3-4 that does nothing but blitz, there is no advantage to running a 3-4. 3-4 defenses are supposed to mask the 4th blitzer and get more athletic players on the field.

You like to hear your coach say things like this, but w Miles it means nothing, and on the off chance it does mean something, it's probably the opposite.

When Kevin Greene played OLB with the Steelers, he rushed the passer nearly everydown. Those Blitzburgh defenses used to be pretty good.

I didnt say having a lb that did nothing but blitz made your defense bad. I said it takes away the advantages of running a 3-4. If you have a 3-4 defense and 1 lb blitzes every play you really have a 4-3 with one player not having his hand in the dirt,

I like Aranda and the different looks he's going to put on the field, but I'm not sure we have the personnel for a 3-4 right now. The biggest example is Lewis Neal. As a 4-3 end he provided a really good pass rush last year. As a 3-4 I feel like he'll lose that effectiveness.

Ever notice how during the Miles era, the majority of our DLinemen drafted are drafted to a 3-4 scheme?

Dorsey
Mingo
Ferguson
Ricky Jean-Francois
Tyson Jackson
Sam Montgomery
Kyle Williams

The list goes on..We recruit to that scheme and I've always wondered why we never ran it under Les.

watched some of bama before our game started. They were almost exclusively running an even front.

tim williams gave them hell but, I don't think robinson played today.

In a 2 gap 3-4 probably not.

But in. A 1 gap R isn't really undersized.

Thoughts?

IDK if Neal will be less effective. Perhaps.

But even if so, I think our D will be much improved - not only over Steele's '15 version but even what Chavis could've done.

He needs to be standing up playing the lolb spot he doesn't have the size to be a 3-4 end and playing him at end takes away his pass rushing ability which is what he's best at. I was surprised at a few position personnel I saw tday I'm crossing my fingers that some changes will be made by fall. Again I'm pretty sure miles picks the starters and not aranda so I'm a little worried
