Let's do some basic math regarding the basketball program, shall we?

1) Matt McMahon's buyout if he's fired after 6/30/2025 appears to be at least $9,760,000 or 80% of the remaining contract. (This number is assuming the extra contract year kicker wasn't activated by the NCAA sanctions.)

2026 - $2,500,000 + $400,000 base
2027 - $2,600,000 + $400,000
2028 - $2,700,000 + $400,000
2029 - $2,800,000 + $400,000

LINK

2) LSU's roster NIL cost this season is supposedly $1,500,000 and the top end talent is clearly lacking.

3) LSU basketball in 2022-2023 season made a $1,340,000 profit.

LINK

Where is the money coming from for his insane buyout, hiring a better staff, and another $5-10 million to buy an elite roster?

It’s not. At least in the near future. That’s why everyone needs to relax. Or I guess they can choose to be miserable.

Or fans will check out and not watch or go to games.

Get familiar with the Saints, because that’s where this is going

Do fans care enough about basketball to want to pony up for the buyout?

My next issue: LSU has rabid fans for 2 sports right now, football and baseball. LSU also does a damn good job of supporting the Lady Tigers and gymnastics. I can see how people are just “meh” on even caring about men’s hoops. I’d love to see them become good again, but I’m usually distracted enough by football and baseball to get by.

Mac should get one more year and will. 4 years is long enough to make the tourney if you can. He's got to show big improvement next year. Just do it.

It's more entertaining griping about the sh#tty coach than watching his team find new ways to hand the ball for an opposing fast break.

You and the OP are 100% right it’s exhibit #1 why taking the easy way out and not standing by Wade was a horrible piss poor decision for the athletic results and business results of LSU basketball.

Why would anyone waste millions buying an elite college basketball roster? It's a niche sport.

LSU is paying McMahon next year whether he coaches or not. It’s a sunk cost. LSU is not “saving” anything by keeping him, and keeping him will likely lead to a decrease in revenues.

But it is interesting you cite the 22-23 season (in which LSU had an awful season). That’s because it was BEFORE the new media contract kicked in. The SEC schools were getting about $54M annually from the prior deal. They will receive about $75M this year…and that number is expected to increase annually. Some estimates have the SEC schools bringing in near $100M in annual revenue by 2030.

Whatever “savings” LSU would realize by keeping McMahon for one more useless season could be significantly offset by the increased interests (read: revenue) generated by hiring a new HC. The money is there to pay a $9M buyout

You're forgetting that revenue sharing is now in effect which the $20 million dollar raise is now going back to the athletes and not the athletic department. So the department will get a grand total of...$1 million extra to split amongst all sports.

FIFY. Nobody on a national level really cares about college baseball. It's fun to watch, but college basketball is much more important than baseball both financially and in terms of prestige.

CMM will be here next year IMHO. I think everyone can have their opinions about the merits of this and as I have found out every time I post this opinion, many don't think he should be - but I do believe you will find that he will be back next year.

So, I hope he can find something aside from what if's to turn things around and make something of his last opportunity, because I do believe that if we have this type of SEC start next year, even in the apathetic world that is LSU men's basketball - a move will have to be made.
