If Porter's contention that the first time greyshirt was discussed with him was on Monday, than yes, Miles and Co. dropped the ball. This subject should have been discussed well befor ethis time so that Porter and his family could take their time when making important decisions regarding his future. I'll say he was treated badly. I would expect my coach to give me some idea before this.

With qualifying going the way it went, the conversation would have been hypothetical anyway.

fwiw, I thought Porter would end up being the gem of that class, when all was said and done.

Maybe you should read the article before you start talking out of your arse. Fordham decided to join the team as a walk-on so he could be on the team this fall. I'm sure anyone asked to grey-shirt could have done the same if they could afford to pay.

Maybe you should read the article again. Yes Fordham is choosing to walk on.

From the article:

quote:

Grayshirting requires the player to sit out the fall semester and enroll in January and counts against the next year's recruiting class.

I apologize...the only quote i read from Porter didn't mention anything about that being the first time he heard about the greyshirt.

The timing is what everyone has an issue with, not the act of asking him to greyshirt.

If they just found out that everyone qualified, when were they supposed to offer the greyshirt? Serious question, not being a smartass. I don't keep up with all this stuff like alot of the gurus on here.

I know it's in the article, but it's not entirely accurate.
A grayshirt CAN enroll in the Fall, taking up to 11 semester hours. He can't practice with the team, participate in any team activities or use team facilities.

This is probably why Fordham chose the preferred walk-on route. He can enroll fulltime, work out and practice with the team, but his eligibilty clock starts ticking.

Welcome to the Real World.

Sometimes you get a job, work you butt off, only to loose it to someone more talented.

Tough lesson, but a lesson. Sorry

There was apparently some discussion of this in the past since Porter told Miles that he wouldn't grey shirt. The question is really what was said and how it was said in that conversation, and we are never going to know. Those that like Miles will assume one thing. Those that don't will assume another. ...And everyone will be able to argue till they're blue in the face. ...Awesome!

I've found things that contradict the facilities part.

I've got a question, according to what I heard Porter got an unconditional release from LSU right?

So does that mean they could have conditioned his release and something like no SEC schools?

Why if LSU is not going to give him a scholarship should they have any say in where he goes if they wanted to?

You sure are taking this hard.

When you consider the amount of change that goes on between seasons from an attrition standpoint, the number of kids that aren't yet qualified by signing day, it's pretty damn reasonable that every now and then, this could happen.

And, when it does, the coaching staff has to make tough decisions. Like Miles said, it's not something they wanted to happen. So, they will try and sell Porter on the grayshirt or accept their medicine if/when he chooses to leave.

It's a calculated risk. And, it is a pretty clear sign that this coaching staff is pushing the envelope pretty far. It's pretty much exactly what I would want out of our coaching staff to be honest.

quote:

Porter said first he heard ab anything concerning a greyshirt was Monday and never saw it coming. That's my point of contention, not that someone was greyshirted or that everybody does it.

Ferguson, Wing, and Gore all qualified in the last week or so. If any one of those does not occur, he doesn't have to go to Porter for the grayshirt. It's very possible that they did not expect this until very recently.

Thanks for the information. Just for the sake of discussion, and I hate that it even happened, But if he really worked out for the summer and the coaches had a good chance to look at him and the other recruits on campus. And they had never discussed the possibility of a grey shirt with him, then the next question would be, why him? I'll be very interested at following his career. Here or where ever he goes. Best of luck to him. I truly believe that this was a very unexpected turn of events. Something again that the coaches can learn something from.
