As somebody else points out, talented players who transfer to us are great people, but those with talent who transfer away are deeply flawed.
Business considerations for the player are NIL money, playing time, development from coaching. He can get those things at any one of a dozen or more schools.
I got mad when i heard he was transferring as well, but that is based on purely emotional considerations like loyalty to state and team.
Until we see the terms of his business deal (and with which school), it is too early to say he is not "smart".

The epitome of selfishness.
With the current NIL, you can expect more "collegiate" athletes testing the system each year to try to get a better deal. This is all about $$.

My belief is the NFL loves the transfer portal. After a few years of run time with it they will use it as a tool for signing undeveloped kids in the lower rounds on their potential. I believe we will see these kids getting drafted in the lower round not making it through preseason camp because they lost their desire/edge to compete.
I also believe the colleges like it as well it makes it easy for the programs to let the kids leave and the coaches not coming across as harasses and cutting players for better players

Can we finally stop pretending his name is Lance?
Well he does seem to have only one nut.
It’s common for Lances. I hate Lances. All of them. Never met a Lance I respected.
Lance Heard was just added to the list.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I believe there were some LSU recruiting insiders who suggested this was completely an NIL decision. Heard played a good bit last season. Hell, he even started a game (Army). He was clearly LSU's "6th" OL already and was going to have a shot to earn a starting spot next season. But, if you are an in demand prospect at an in demand position there is a financial market for your services. He decided he wanted to try to get a new deal.
From LSU's perspective they have to be somewhat smart as to how they allocate their NIL funds. Not unlike a salary cap so to speak. They still have to pay other players. So it appears they decided giving an increased "salary" to a backup OT was not the best financial decision on the whole. LSU is returning two veteran and good tackles next season. They are also returning two veteran guards who played relatively well. Thus, there was no 100% guarantee they would need Heard to start next season. Throw in the fact they have 4 additional OL on the team and just signed 6 OL prospects, and they maybe decided upping Heard's "salary" wasn't the best move.
If there is a 6 figure market out there for a player I don't blame him for considering it. But sometimes as a coach (akin to a business owner) you have to look at the big picture and make some tough financial decisions. Kelly probably felt they were comfortable enough at the OL position to not be forced to meet the demand for a "new contract".
Like it or not, this is the college football world we live in.

Hey Heard why did you quit on your team? Good luck answering that.
2000 guys in the portal this year alone. You honestly think NFL gives a rats arse about what a freshman player did in the transfer portal 2-3 yrs prior… wow!
FTR I am not in favor of him transferring out either but not anything we can do about it. If he lights it up at a new program nobody will care that he transferred.

I agree. But not necessarily for the reasons you listed. I think they like it because it creates somewhat of an NFL "farm system" that can filter out the potential NFL player from those who aren't.
The top HS prospects are (almost) always going to sign with the power conf. programs...which represent the highest level of competition in college football. If those prospects can't perform at that level the power conf. coaches, with the transfer rules, generally have an incentive to "process" those players in exchange for others (transfers). Those "processed" players often end up at the lower level teams and NFL scouts can generally take them off their radar.
On the flip side, the transfer rules allow guys who were low rated HS prospects to make their way up through the "farm system". Guys who are really good G6 players often transfer to power conference schools. The NFL probably loves that because it gives them a free preview as to how that guy will perform against tougher competition.
In the past, if you drafted a guy from a G6 school you hoped that ability would carry over to a significantly increased level of competition (the NFL), but that was always a concern. Could a guy who was really good at ULL, Kent St., Coastal Carolina, make it in the NFL? Now, you often get to see those guys jump from those schools to the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, etc before entering the draft which gives NFL scouts an opportunity to see them against tougher competition before decided whether to draft them or not.
Look at a guy like Jared Verse. He was really, really good at Albany. Likely good enough to get drafted if he stayed there. But, there would always be the unknown of if his play at Albany was a byproduct of competition FAR weaker than what he would face in the NFL. However, he gets to transfer to FSU and performs well there. That basically solidified him as a 1st round pick because the NFL has seen his production against the top level of competition in college football.

You mean whoever, not whomever. Whoever is a subject pronoun. Whomever is an object pronoun. You disgust me.

This place has really degenerated into a real shite hole, with trash people spewing poisonous words. Some of yall should be ashamed of yourselves. JFC.

Really good take... it is functioning exactly like that... There is a method for the small school guys to move up now, meaning there will be little reason for the pro's to scour those schools trying to find a diamond in the rough. On the other side... a player like Speights was all Pac-12 and a highly prized transfer, but his showing against SEC competition has revealed the opposite... you can take him off your draft list now. Pro scouts job just got easier... to the point where they may not be needed.

Lance Heard reportedly has multiple SEC visits planned as he considers his future.
The offensive tackle was the top player in LSU’s 2023 signing class and will leave the Bayou after just one season. The freshman tackle will visit with the Oklahoma Sooners and Tennessee Volunteers this weekend, per On3’s Pete Nakos.

The pros don't seem to care if the measurables are there.

These guys are effectively now on one year, renewable contracts. They don’t like perceived value($), terms, position or playing time and they will move on.

Everyone is selfish. Everyone. Everyone is looking out for their own interest. If a player stays, he believes is in his interest to stay.
As far as this kid, good luck to him. He didn’t show anything special anyway. We have plenty of bodies to step in at tackle after this year.

This is a new era in college football. The NIL and transfer portal has ushered in a new form of free agency. Gone are the days players are locked in to one school. It affects every team and LSU is not immune to some good or highly recruited players taking advantage of the system.
The answer is to manage the roster like NFL teams do. Recruit for quality depth. This is why teams are moving to hire Football General Managers like Austin Thomas at Ole Miss. Recruit and Hit the portal and stockpile players 3-4 deep at every position. They have to because players may leave at any time. I hope A Thomas can be lured back to LSU. That is a fooball staff position that needs to be filled at LSU.
