I really just don’t understand the point of him doing the Vanity Fair interview/photo op. Besides the fact that he likes the attention.

Yep. The apology makes it look worse IMO. Because, as you say, this was brought on by him doing a completely unnecessary interview.

The four hour interview was a four hour trap, and he should know that. They were looking for a 10 second needle in a four hour haystack which can almost always be found.
He’s smart enough to know not to do the interview, and hopefully that intuition will outweigh any desire for attention/“brand exposure” going forward.
