Kerry Cooks was a DB coach at Oklahoma from 2015-2018.

Oklahoma passing yards allowed during that time:

2015: 202 YPG

2016: 279 YPG (10th worst in the country)

2017: 241 YPG

2018: 291 YPG (2nd worst in the country)

quote:

In the days following Oklahoma’s Orange Bowl loss to Alabama, Riley reshaped his defensive staff, hiring Alex Grinch as coordinator/safeties coach and Roy Manning as cornerbacks coach. In Cooks’ final three seasons — 2016-18 — OU ranked 111th, 87th and 129th, respectively, in the FBS in pass defense. The 2018 ranking was last nationally, and that squad intercepted only six passes.

He's a secondary coach. He's not going to come in here and suddenly start coaching the defensive line or linebackers for the first time in his career.

Well the hope is he’s only an analyst. If he’s our DB coach this is going to be bad

Cooks coached terrific secondaries for Kelly at Notre Dame.

Nobody's numbers look good playing defense in the Big 12.

Oklahoma won the league all four years he was there.

And he's an ace recruiter in Texas.

You're going to need a good defensive coordinator to go with him. And it wouldn't be a bad idea for the DC to coach either safeties or corners so he's more or less in the room with Cooks.

In other words, Cooks is your Mickey Joseph.

It's probably not a great hire, but this guy is being brought in to recruit Texas. Somebody else is going to be the real DB's coach.

The thing to research is OU's pass efficiency defense during those four years and where that ranks. You're going to give up a lot of passing yards in the Big 12, because they throw it every down. Not to mention Oklahoma was lighting up the scoreboard every week at that point, which meant teams had no choice but to throw it to keep up with them.

And Brent Venables oversaw some of the worst defenses while there as Co-DC. They had terrible players.

More news: Former Oklahoma and Notre Dame defensive back coach/co-defensive coordinator Kerry Cooks is joining the #LSU staff, sources tell @TheAthletic. Cooks' specific role isn't decided yet, but he'll be an assistant coach on Brian Kelly's staff.

LSU was dead fricking last in passing yards given up last year, yet everyone loves Raymond (and I think for good reason)

Sometimes there is a lot of context that needs to be added to raw passing yardage

It said “undefined coaching role”. And he was an analyst under Kelly last year stupid so stop assuming he’s a DB coach and crying about it

If Cooks is taking Raymond’s place then LSU just downgraded massively.
