um, hiring good coordinators is an art.

See Saban.

It can be argued Bama dipped in the last couple of years of his reign because he wasn't replacing Sark, Kiffin, Smart, and others with the same quality assistants.

Are you sure about that? How can you say for sure? They lost their first 2 games to teams with a pulse and since then they've played absolutely NOBODY lol.

Not at the same time on both sides of the ball, at least.

Maybe not. But none of those dudes have been HCs for a full 10 years. They are all in their primes. Ryan Day is 46 and in his 7th season. Dan Lanning is 39 and in his 4th. Kirby is 49 and in his 10th season.

Been saying this for years. You are 100% correct. I use to have others on the list such as Dabo Sweeny, Bob Stoops, Gary Patterson, Mark Richt (while at GA), and Jimbo Fisher (while at FSU), Lincoln Riley(at OU).

Bottomline every coaching hire is a gamble. The championship or bust mentality is not sustainable model. There is an equally long list of can't miss up and coming hires over the past decade that never panned out Tom Herman, Billy Napier, Coach at A&M before Jimbo, Jimbo Fisher, etc.

There is no magic formula for finding the right guy.

This is for a majority of the coaches both in college and NFL. Miles won a NC bc of Pelini defensive scheme. When Pelini left the defense suffered bc of his decision to have 2 coaches be the DC.

The success of 2019 was not bc of O being a great HC but the capabilities of of Aranda and Ensminger and Brady. Those coaches made the defense and offense better. Also the work of the players learning the system and playing great.

“RosemaryTiger”; I would support a BK firing and promoting Blake Baker to interim. Then we can see if he is HC material. If not he can keep his DC job or move on.

Both teams are evenly matched if you capable of any logical comparisons.

Excellent reasoning there to make your point.

I usually am.

Also, Kirby Smart was Nick Saban’s DC at Bama when he was hired at Georgia. Nobody would have accepted LSU hiring him as HC at the time. Besides the fact that he hadn’t been a HC yet, they would have said “he didn’t do anything at Bama except recruit. He was Saban’s puppet as DC. Everybody knows that was Saban’s defense.”

Dan Lanning was Kirby’s DC at Georgia when Oregon hired him as HC. LSU fans would have lost their minds if we’d have hired a 35-year-old 1st time HC. And they’d have said the EXACT same thing they would have if we’d have hired Kirby. “LSU is not the place to learn on the job. He may be a great recruiter, but EVERYBODY knows that was Kirby’s defense, and he was just a puppet.”

Same for Day who took was promoted from being Urban Meyer’s OC when he was 39. “Urban Meyer is one of the greatest offensive minds in college football history. EVERYBODY knows Day was just a puppet and that was Urban’s offense he was running.” Hell, there are still people—dumbasses—who think he sucks even after winning the NC last year because they lost 2 games (one to a mediocre Michigan) and he inherited a program that was already humming and was probably the 2nd best in the country this century behind Bama. And you could make an argument that OSU has been the better (or more consistent) program of the 2 in that time frame because they didn’t have the lows with the run of “Mikes” Bama did before Saban got there.

So arguably the best 3 coaches in the country currently—Kirby, Day, and Lanning—NONE of them would have accepted by LSU fans when they were hired because of the criteria we all have. Ironically, having coached under 3 of the best coaches in CFB history (Saban, Meyer, and Kirby himself) would have been used as negatives against them.

The pool of coaches who would meet that criteria is very small. The pool of coaches who would meet that criteria AND leave their current schools is even smaller. Which is why Woodward HAD to give Brian Kelly that contract. It’s what it took to give LSU fans what they want. And that is exactly what they got—what they wanted. They don’t want it in hindsight, but aren’t self aware enough or intellectually honest enough to realize their demands are why we’re here.

Exactly. If it was that easy, everybody would do it. 3 things I’ve always said about coaching searches/hires that are sooooooooo underrated: 1) timing, 2) quality of life, 3) luck.

This is the most sensible take I have seen on here all year. Hell guys, it appears that every year theres that "up and coming phenom head coach" that many times doesnt pan out.

Kirby and Saban can jump in on Defense. Kiffin, Urban, Riley know offense.
BK is another "program manager" that cannot fix anything on his own.

Let’s see how Kirby, Day, and Lanning are doing in their mid 60s after coaching for 30+ seasons.
Bet none of them get a 10 year 100 mil contract in their 60's either. Dumb contracts are dumb contracts. That contract is biting LSU in the arse.

Sounds like, at one time anyway, he had a pretty good eye for assistants

Yeah, although it seems his best years of coaching are behind him, he only had two losing seasons in 35 years of coaching. So he obviously was a good coach who had good coaches around him for a long time.
