He couldn’t win a title with Tennessee talent at a time when Tennessee was an infinitely better program than LSU.

He did win the SEC. But to be fair, he still couldn't beat Florida. Tennessee backed into the title game with LSU and Georgia beating Florida.

I forgot State made a SEC title game, pretty wild.

Got my years mixed up on that. State made it the following year--the year Tennessee won the national title with Tee Martin. Manning played Auburn in the title game the prior year. Then Manning's Tennessee team got crushed by Nebraska in the bowl.

Mannings do NOT play at LSU, period!

Relative to Peyton Manning? Absolutely.

Young bucks view Ole Miss as an annoyance. The older folks of my parents and grandparents generation viewed Ole Miss as Satan’s college.

Archie wisely counseled his kid to go to a school with a coach who would develop him toward being an NFL-ready QB.
Speaking of Cutcliffe, did UT hire him as an analyst yet? Arch is going wherever Cutcliffe ends up.

And Manning did not run from Booty. In fact, Tennessee already had another great freshman recruit at QB - a guy named Branndon Stewart, who was a hot shot recruit out of Texas.
This is 100% correct. In the 1994 Signing Class Tennessee signed the #2 & #3 ranked QB’s in America in Peyton Manning & Brandon Stewart. LSU had the #1 overall ranked class that year with Booty being the headliner as #1 ranked overall recruit.
Stewart would transfer to Texas A&M and lead them to the 1998 Big 12 Title over Kansas State.
If all these recruiting services & Internet existed back then I can’t even imagine the mania & hysteria that would have gone on with Booty picking LSU and with the Top 2 recruits in America being in Louisiana.

Fun fact: Booty and Manning have the same number of national championships…

Other than growing up/living in New Orleans the Mannings have no affiliation with LSU whatsoever. Archie played for LSU's biggest rival at a time where rivalries still meant something. Peyton went to play for a coach (Cutcliffe) he and his father believed in. Eli went to his Dad's alma mater, which I am sure he was far more familiar with than LSU, to be the next hero there.
There was no "birth right" requirement the Mannings go to LSU. Particularly at a time when LSU was mostly a crappy program But how dare Peyton not choose to go to a program that was in the midst of 4 straight losing seasons with a HC who was on the verge of being fired. Why would Eli choose to go to his father's beloved alma mater when he could have driven 90 miles northwest to play for a program, who fired their HC, that was coming off a 3-8 season, the 7th losing season in a decade?

Archie Manning was the best college qb in the family. Peyton was OK but his younger brother got his arse kicked when he played LSU !!!

I can't upvote enough. For a family that never had a member play for LSU. I hold the Jeffersons more highly than these bums....

Meanwhile, the article has no mention of Josh Booty..

What another “Manning Crock of BS”!!
That greedy family will say and promote their lustful avarice, using Louisiana and the fools who are gullible enough to repeat their lies!!

This was after not playing football for four years. Always wonder how good of a college QB he could have been had he went to LSU right out of high school.
