People overlook this because they are busy throwing a fit about NIL but having those relationships and recruiters still helps. In fact maybe paramount else you risk guys here solely because we paid more than someone else instead of someone here because we paid nicely but also having an anchor they trust.
In a staff of 4 or 5 with a tremendous x and o coach that understands the game at the head having one guy just be here to recruit isn’t bad.

That is easy Jones is an excellent recruiter. Outside of his last year our roster was stacked with talent when he was here

He’s a good recruiter and well connected in Louisiana and Texas AAU circuits. Also knows how to navigate the booster scene. Doubt he’ll be game planning much.

This might come as a bit of a surprise to some, but that is because Jones was "well funded" in his time at LSU.

Does TSU have any players worth bringing with Jones?

BR/Alumni guy. Because Dupree and most likely Tasmin are out.

Johnny Jones has made the NCAA tourney more recently than LSU/McShitter has

Because Jones is a former player and coach under Brown so naturally boosters liked him and he is good at it.
I like the move a lot. Wade back in and him plus Heath are tapping into new money that wasn’t here before in Lake Chuck area, plus the boosters giving more and then you have Jones that can maybe bring in money that wouldn’t come otherwise. Then pear up Stansbury who is another elite recruiter and big man specialist. It’s clear Wade has a plan to rebuild this quickly

Jones also made the tournament at LSU while McShit never sniffed it. McShit basically just put up 3 of Jones worst seasons and an outlier that still sucked

LSU was paying David Patrick $625k to essentially do the recruiting/fundraising McMahon did not want to do.
Jones was making less than $300k as HC at TSU. He could join the LSU staff, make more with less responsibility, and likely do a better job with local fundraising which is necessary for the program.
Some are freaking out like Wade hired Jones to be the HC. Jones was able to sign guys like Martin, Mickey, Quarterman, Blakeney, etc. I promise, it wasn't just because Johnny had a nice suit. He was raising money. So I'm not quite understanding the freakout over getting a guy on staff who has proven to be pretty good at raising money to pay LSU recruits.

Johnny Jones single-handedly took us to the cellar of the SEC and brought NCAA sanctions. This is so wrong and stupid. JJ should not be rewarded and should not show his face in the assembly center.

Yea exactly there is zero reason anyone should freak out that Jones is back. They forget the talent he acquired and just think of the bad coaching. His job is to fund raise and recruit and he does those well.

He's hiring him (primarily) to help generate the funds to get the players running the sets.
So he’s come full circle…from bagman to HC back to bagman.

Not really. Best player is a senior. They have a couple decent guards that are both seniors. The guy from Bossier might be able to get another year but not really an sec player.

Jones did not "single-handedly" do that. If anything, he was the primary fall guy for Brown. Regardless, that was over 30 years ago...in a completely different era of college sports.
He's not being "rewarded" as if this is some sort of letter writing competition. He's being hired to fill a specific role on staff. This is an absurd overreaction. Are we worried Jones might help pay players again? If so, GOOD! LSU has to pay players

Shaq wants to invest in the new arena.
Are there any articles or quotes on this? I'm intrigued. And does he want his name on the building? Would be tough to scratch Pete's name off, but if Shaq is the one primarily funding the building....

Thanks. Good input.
I'd guess that TSU is one of the worst, cheapest D1 schools to be HC of.

Nope Alt, these anti Wade idiots know everyone cheats, it's just the last shred of logical (in their warped minds) opposition to him coming back.
Kinda like sticking their fingers in their ears and screaming lalalalala!!!!

The question is, what is he best at?
Being a very well connected bag man a lot of very highly rated recruits have liked over the years in the LA/TX areas.
It's different a bit in the NIL era but you still want the well connected inroads guy who can help deliver the pitch in the end and Johnny Jones can be very good with that.
It also doesnt hurt to have a guy with over 2 decades of D1 head coach experience coming in just to be an assistant. He's not totally worthless as a coach, he made the tournament 3x at Texas Southern since going there and while he only made it once in 5 years here only his last year was a true disaster type year, the other 4 were all "Respectable", 3 of them just weren't quite good enough to get into the tournament but we finished 9-9 or better in the conference. He couldnt quite "elevate" LSU to where we should be but it's a far cry from the garbage we experienced in most of the last 4 years under McMahon being bottom of conference.
