re: Joel Klatt: "LSU Wasn't As Dominant as the Score Suggests"

The only reason I'm not extremely worried about our performance in what I find to be key offensive metrics (Red Zone and 3rd down), is that I really really liked what I saw out of Burrow. We'll be better.

He’s not wrong. We had less than 300 yards of offense and completed less than 50% of passes.
Stats are like bikinis. What they reveal is interesting. What they HIDE is vital. LSU had a Pick 6...thus, zero yards of offense on THAT possession. LSU kneeled to end both halves...thus, NEGATIVE yards on those possessions. An interception setting up a short field. Their punter sucked balls..setting up short fields.

Minus 2 big plays the game was really close.

No doubt. I think Burrow is going to be so so good by the end of the year. For only being on campus a couple of months... he was impressive.

1/7 from the second half is almost twice as bad as 2/9 But Yea, we need work on converting 3rd down.
All I’m saying is that 2/9 isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire.

I'm not going to play the "what if" game, but he has a point. We, as fans, look at the final score, but there is much LSU can improve on moving forward from this game. Our ST is a strength this year, this is looking like one of our better (not best) defenses in the last 10 years, but we still have questions on O-line, a run game that is adequate (reminds me of when Charles Scott was our leading rusher), and still rough execution in our passing game. The big takeaway I got from the game, though, is that the question marks on offense are fixable. Burrow seems to be a legitimate threat, and when he and the receivers improve their chemistry, this is going to be a fun team to follow.

Let's say Miami has half the number of penalties
This made a big difference and I LOL all night as offsides was in UM's head all game.

And our kicker would have been kicking field goals from 74 instead of 54. He’d probably still make em though.

“Was not very impressed.”
“ I kind of agree. “
If anyone can’t be impressed with beating up on the eighth ranked team in the country 33 to 3 on a neutral field going into the fourth quarter and winning by 16, they will never be impressed.
Does it mean that LSU is a sure thing to be playing in the playoffs? No, but it’s a damn good statement for the team as is evidenced by the rapid climb in the polls?
We will know better what the Miami win means for that program after we play Auburn.

Most everyone is praising us but you find one of the few that's not and give him clicks.

Hey Joel Kmart...member that one time when LSU played Miami and had 3 TDs, 4 field goals, 4 sacs and 2 INTs while giving up 2 garbage TDs in the 4th?
Yeah, me too...good times. Go dominate your pud ‘cause your writing and assessment skills betray you.

With LSU's schedule no one is going out on a limb by predicting the team won't be "world beaters". Real ballsy there guy.

LSU had six offensive possessions in the first half. We scored 2 TDs and 2 FGs. We punted once and we took a knee to end the half. Our defense scored a TD as well.
We had 221 yards of offense in the first half. Now, that number isn't crazy, but when you consider short fields and a missed possession because of our Pick 6, it's not terrible.
In the second half, we only moved the ball a total of 115 yards. We had two FGs, 4 punts and a kneel down to end the game.
So it's fair to say that our conservative, no turnover, run out the clock approach accounts for a lot of the stats Klatt cites.

I didn't like completely going into a shell on offense in the second half though.
It was off and on. 2nd drive was pretty open if i recall.
Not everything was great. I don't think our OL blocked well enough to really go for the jugular through the air. I think they played it right.

I don't think he actually hates the SEC. The SEC just isn't affiliated with the network that cuts his paychecks. Consider the source when you hear his opinion.
I don't know if he actually hates it or not, but even Matt Leinart occasionally ribs Klatt on-air for his takes on the SEC. When Leinart is calling you out, you might be doubling-down on stupid a bit too much.
Overall, I think Klatt does a good job though.

Why is everyone so butthurt?? If you watched the game he's not to far off.. The defense played great, the offense was nothing special.. They couldnt pound the rock with much efficiency except for 4 or 5 carries, offensivr line couldnt pass block or run block consistently, burrow did some nice things but he's still has a lot of room to grow but with more reps that should come, red zone play calling and thrid down offense was terrible all game

Comparing stats is ridiculous. Miami was playing catch-up most of the night, and we were taking the air out of the ball the entire second half.

Let's say Jacoby Stevens doesn't drop that interception in the endzone, Fulton doesn't get called for the 2nd PI, we actually convert just one of the those 3rd and goals and we win 37-3?
The "what if" game is fun isn't it.
