HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison University has been accepted for admission into the American Conference following a university application and a unanimous vote of the American CEOs. JMU will join as a full league member no later than July 1, 2028.
Following a formal written application from James Madison University, the American conducted a deliberate and comprehensive due diligence process to evaluate the institution, its alignment with the American and the long-term value of the relationship. The evaluation considered six primary areas: institutional and academic alignment; competitive strength and trajectory; institutional investment; financial sustainability and member value; brand, media value, fan engagement, and geography and operational fit. The conference used multiple sources of analysis, including a quantitative media-value study examining market characteristics, audience performance, fan engagement, competitive performance and other value drivers.
"The Board of Visitors voted unanimously to authorize the university to apply for and accept an invitation for membership in the American Conference, and we did so with tremendous confidence and excitement for this university's future. The American Conference is the right home for James Madison University, academically, competitively, and geographically. This conference is where our academic peers compete, they have a shared vision for the future, it's where our alumni live and work, and where our student-athletes will thrive," said Dave Rexrode '01, Rector of the James Madison University Board of Visitors. "The Madison Promise commits us to excellence and ambition, and this conference change reflects both. We are grateful for the Sun Belt Conference, its member institutions, and the championships and relationships we built together over the past few years. And as Rector of this board and as a proud JMU alumnus, I have never been more excited about the future of this university."
"We are honored that our request for membership in the American Conference has been accepted. I am grateful to Commissioner Tim Pernetti and the conferences' presidents and chancellors for their confidence in James Madison University," stated JMU President James Schmidt. "The American is home to member institutions who share our ambitious academic goals and our unwavering commitment to student success. Our student-athletes will compete in cities where JMU alumni are already rooted and future Dukes will fill the stands. With this move, we carry deep appreciation for the Sun Belt Conference and its member institutions. Their partnership helped position JMU for this moment, and we are proud of everything we built together."
The American Conference "full" membership includes 13 institutions: Alabama-Birmingham, Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, North Texas, Rice, South Florida, Temple, Texas-San Antonio, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. In football, the conference also includes Army and Navy, while Wichita State does not sponsor football.

Reverse conference realignment wave. The American knows it is likely to get raided by the ACC/Big 12 after the P2 raid the ACC.
I could see Memphis and South Florida to the Big 12 and/or Tulane to the ACC once that happens.

Is the American a better league than the Sunbelt moving forward? I'm assuming their current TV contract is better.
I know JMU's end goal has always been the ACC.

Whoever has run JMU for the last decade needs a hell of a raise.

Liberty to the Sun Belt to replace JMU?

Yeah extremely impressive.

Is the AAC going to add another team to keep an even number of football programs? Or are they going to go the ACC route of stupidity with an odd number of teams so every year, one school plays a different number of conference games than everyone else.

A couple of weeks ago there was a report that JMU, Miami (OH) and Uconn (Football only) were all trying to get in. Miami (OH) and Uconn were kind of given the cold shoulder but nobody ever really said anything about JMU. Honestly, theres nobody else that really moves the needle in this region other than JMU but that hasnt stopped the American before

I think they mostly just take advantage of VT’s geography/leadership problem and UVA generally not being a serious athletic department.

I think the AAC is in a wait and see. Pre-emptive move to get JMU before the SBC upped their exit fee. With the CFP going to 24 soon the ACC and B12 are about to go get some AAC teams. This is just the AAC sending a signal to their teams that they are putting themselves in a spot to not make a hasty decision if they lose a couple teams. I don't think they will play with uneven numbers, unless it's 1 season during the transition year. This is domino number 1, ball is in the B12 and ACC's court as to when the next one falls and the chain starts.

JMU paid $28M to join the AAC.
I believe that is their ceiling, since Memphis couldn't get into Big 12 with a $250 million offer to pay their way into Big 12.
$28M is a good chunk of change to have the same access the SBC offers.

quote:I don't disagree. I think this clearly elevates the American (depending on losses and new additions) to the top G6 by pulling a top 5 G6 program over. It also hurts the SBC losing their top program. Clear hierarchy now in the G6 with this move:

They have a $2500 student fee that specifically goes to athletics. With 24,000 students that's a massive leg up on most G5s.

Wish the American could drop the bottom CUSA schools they added last time. That was a mistake. Charlotte/UAB/Rice should definitely be dropped. They won't tho.
If the PCSA passes and there is less movement at P4 come 2030, I could see a consolidation of top of American and top of PAC into a new conference to "best of the rest". Probably via a merger into the PAC. Would be 16 FB schools and 16 basketball.
Tulane
JMU
Memphis
USF
Army
Navy
UTSA
UNT
Boise
SDSU
Oregon St
Wash St
Fresno St
Colorado St
Texas St
Utah St.
Gonzaga (Basketball Only)
Wichita St (Basketball Only)

Geez. Imagine being someone who doesn't care about sports at all and having almost 20% of your in-state tuition expense being an athletics fee.

In no sane world should schools from New York, Maryland, and Florida be in the same conference as schools in California, Oregon, and Washington.
Its only slightly less retarded for the B1G and ACC to do it because there's a lot more money involved there than with a G5 conference. But still retarded nonetheless.
