Played a round of golf with the current Zona pitching coach in the offseason and he was pretty sure JJ was going to win a title at some point.

I have no idea. Maybe, maybe not. Mainieri locked up plenty of other studs and top ranked recruiting classes during his time here so I’m not sure why you are so certain that he couldn’t get any good players. With Mainieri having spent time at Air Force, I’m sure we still would have been in contention for Skenes at the very least.

Say what you will about CPM but his teams were peaking now. Not always championship teams but they were always playing their best at the end of the season.

I don’t mean this as an insult to Jay, but he comes off as a nerd.
I get the feeling that the only thing he does every day of his life is work on this team in some way.

Yea he is constantly consuming baseball things and finding ways to improve.

I like his work ethic on the recruiting and transfer portal. I do think he eventually breaks through if not this year, soon.

JJ because he can actually recruit unlike Pawl

Just a few guys he got so far - Barry, Skenes, White

Let that sink in.

Is that bad?

Skip was the same way. He even titled his recent biography "Everything Matters in Baseball."

I'm about halfway through reading it. Good read about how Skip built the program from nothing. And he sure didn't do that by playing golf or going fishing on his off days...

I think he will win more than one natty in his career here.
I don’t think it will be this year. But I am hopeful they make it to Omaha.
It would be a shame for Crews, Morgan, Dugas, Beloso and Thompson to never play in Omaha.

In-game coaching, the NOD goes to PM.

When PM was on, he was better at constructing a balanced roster, too.

Agreed on these points Lester.

Jay's main advantage over Paul is his youth and willingness to be relentless on the recruiting trail.

Hell no it’s not bad. It’s more than fans and players can ask for.
He clearly loves his job and busts his arse at it.

I agree, I think he can get multiple here. It’s a shame this team was so hyped that not winning it will cause issues.

Yep...most years Paul had them playing their best ball at the right time.

In the age of the portal, I would take Jay just because I know the team is going to be talented enough to win it all every year.

worse than that. This fess pool equates player poor performance to coaching decisions.

People love to throw out stuff like this as if we failed on every Louisiana recruit that turned out to be good in college.

Some kids go to other schools because they can get more scholarship money.
No clue if this was his case or not.
Maybe NIL will offset this for the ones that do.

Pulmonary won a championship on the back of Smoke and Turtle's recruiting. Johnson is somewhat representative of Skip without the pitching chops. For Jay to win championships he's going to need an entire staff of Clydesdale's, not just one, to cover for his lack of pitching prowess.

I give the in game nod to PM but it's not nearly enough to make up for the difference in recruiting and roster management. PM's teams were more crisp defensively and on the base paths and probably had more mental toughness. I also liked the way he managed the season in terms of treating the midweeks as a practice and trying different things, and playing the guys with the most upside early on even if they weren't producing. He also rested players who weren't 100% during the season. All of those things helped his teams peak in May and June. He just always had a shite pitching coach and a lesser roster
