Rather than retiring jerseys and taking the numbers off the board completely for other athletes to wear, LSU should call the numbers [The Jayden Daniels #5] and [The Joe Burrow #9]. Permanently put their signature or name inside the number on the uniforms, which would be seen forever on tv

Or… we recognize that numbers were meant to be a way to indicate to event viewers who people on the field and nothing more.
Then in the small print LSU can put… we reserve the right to retire a number based on whatever criteria we see as deserving.

A Hall of Fame, Ring of Honor, etc. is good enough. You don’t need to retire numbers.

I agree. But I also think if LSU wants to retire a number they should be able to do that and there doesn’t have to be a set of rules to dictate who does and doesn’t receive that honor. It’s not about equality or equity.
Why did we retire 20? Because LSU wanted to. Why not 9? Because LSU doesn’t want to (atleast not yet). Same with 5, 3, 7, 18, etc…

Here’s the solution, just stop fricking “retiring” numbers. There’s over 100 players on the team. You need all the numbers.

Yeah Ive never understood the practice of retiring numbers when you have more players than numbers available.
I can see exceptions if there was player that died on the field or like a part tillman situation. Otherwise, congrats on the success, you have a plaque, a statue and name in the stadium...I think that's enough recognition. Oh yeah and you got paid.

LSU & JD5 come together and have a make nice press conference LSU apologizes for the miscommunication between, BK, LSU, retired number, promising the number etc.JD5 plays the bigger man: he understands that miscommunication happens, etc. Then he say that LSU & JD5 have agreed to let the number be used for the duration of DJ's career. Then LSU announces that JB9 & JD5 will be put in the ring of honor inside tiger stadium next/this year and both can be issued moving forward as are all numbers except 20.

Jayden looks bad here. He needs this more than LSU does. It’s not a bad idea though to clear this up. I don’t think you need a press conference though.

we'll soon have to go to the 4 digits on the jersey. So #1421, Ratphuc Hobley's number gets retired , so his mom Rabbitphuc Nobley Hobley can't sue.
P.S. I have no doubt that sometime in the future there'll be some young urchin roaming the streets by the name of Ratphuc.

Or players can focus on continuing to build their legacy as pros and not worry about what is happening in college. If they did this, their legacy would only grow stronger. Instead they just look petty and self centered
