It's a status thing - it shows that your program can develop a player into being the top dog in the country. Same with some of the other awards as well.
So, yeah, it's a big deal.

I love how LSU is really trying to push for him and highlight his awesome accomplishments given how some want to disregard him for LSU's record. I'm not sure what this billboard accomplished exactly though.

Small-minded people…
This is a big opportunity for this program (and university as a whole) to spread the LSU brand in a positive light. Just like when Burrow won it and had pictures everywhere. Just like when LSU won it all in 2019, or the WBb and baseball teams won it all this past spring. You take every opportunity to spread your brand. Not only will it help with recruiting in athletics, it also helps recruit students. It can also help on the NIL front, as well.
