It started with the Miles era with Mathieu. Obviously there were years that we’re skipped. But it’s oretty clear wearing 7 has become a “thing”. Players, fans, and just LSU Football as a whole have embraced it over the years.
I’d prefer them not give out the 7 if they don’t feel a specific player has earned it just yet.

It is true that Mathieu chose to change his number to 7, in homage to Peterson as I recall. But that was a player decision and not a team thing or coaches decision other than allowing it. Vacant when Mathieu left until Fournette picked it up. He said his choice of the number was to honor his home. the 7th ward in NOLA, as I recall.

Now Chark chose to change to that number because of the recent history of the number and in all fairness it does look as though the number has a great deal of significance to the the players now. But if this is supposed to be a tradition like the #18, it should have some criteria attached. The #18 never goes to freshman but a proven upperclassman.

Not gonna happen. Devin is sticking with 40.

I was joking. It’s pretty obvious .

I feel the same way. He hasn't earned it IMO. But at the end of the day this is voted on by the players I assume so we don't really have a say.

Didn't Fournette have this number as a true freshman? I think Giles has been around the program a lot longer than LF was when he was "given" #7.

Giles may deserve it. I don't know and don't care at all

But I find it great Orgeron can't even give a guy a number smoothly and without pissing off ex players and people

If they players vote on who gets the #7 and they voted for him then they have a reason. It is a huge honor to be given to a transfer and the players are aware of it.

If the players decided this then so be it.

Get off Orgeron's back. The man didn't give anyone a number. Some of you little bitches need to grow up.

What a great way to end this #7 fiasco by giving it to an in coming transfer no one really knows anything about. It's just a number. Some great players wore it and it's time to move on. This topic won't be a 5 page thread next year. #18 tradition should continue.

locker room.

7 is and has always been about Play on the Field.

18 is character.

Best Playmaker should wear it. If Devin turned it down for 40, I'm ok with it. If not, it has lost meaning and significance. Chark should have changed mid season. He dropped too many passes.

Perhaps more telling of our fans and one ex-player's, sensitive and delicate nature, than of our coaching staff.

I don't recall any complaints when the number 7 went to a highly touted, but yet unproven running back named Fournette. Some people don't like Coach O with good reason. Others are just looking to bitch for the sake of bitching. This is one of those.

#7 used to decide who got his number.

That happened once. Peterson gave it to Mathieu. Then, no one wore 7 until Fournette. Fournete was given the number as a freshman, no one passed it down to him. Then Chark wore it. There is no indication Fournette passed it to him nor is there any indication Chark passed it to Giles.

Why did Fournette say he decided to wear #7?

I'm sure it was promised to him when he was recruited. There's really no other explanation why no one wore 7 in 2013
