It’s not the worst, but it is one of the most underachieving baseball teams LSU has trotted out there in many years.

THIS!!

Not worse but most underachieving team for sure

Missed on portal, bulletin pitching was an issue outside of maybe 3-5 guys, and your best player ended up getting hurt mid season

No
You should have been around in the sixties. My dad used to take me and my brothers after church on Sundays to give my mother a rest. We sat in the grandstand, and there were maybe fifty to a hundred people there scattered about. I suspect some of them were there to see the other team.
We were able to run around and play while Dad scored the game while shaking his head and frowning (he played in college and semi pro baseball for a while).

Ole Miss and Mississippi State has something to say about that.

2023 Ole Miss was 25-29
2022 Miss St was 26-30
Add 2024 Fla as example- lost in CWS finals to us- went 36-30 the next season.
College baseball in era of NIL and portal is a different animal so not sure it’s applicable to go back further. I do think you’ll see more and more drop-offs from good programs at various times-especially after title runs- The portal forces you to basically nail your replacements- it won’t always be automatic for some really solid programs.

Were you around during the Jim Smith era? BTW…. Jim’s main job was the Equipment man for the football team……then came Skip.

I’ve been trying to convey this to people. With the current setup, if you have enough talent to win a title, 80% of your production is likely coming from upperclassmen. Not guys going to sell insurance the following year either, guy who will spend the next 5+ years grinding in pro ball.

Replacing that production is difficult when the freshman and sophomores can leave on a whim, and the chances of “hitting” on that many replacements from the portal is slim.

It would've had Cole Henry, Jaden Hill, and Landon Marceaux as starters, would've been much better in the field.
Jaden Hill didn't start, and we lost a Cole Henry-Jaden Hill-Devin Fontenot game to Eastern Kentucky. We got no-hit by Oklahoma.

That team would've been horrendous.

Good post. Shows the yearly portal challenge we face.

I would make mention that the '24 UF team finished 13-17 in conference but made it effectively to the CWS semi-finals.

AI: "The 1978 team (6-18 SEC) is often cited as a benchmark for poor performance, but the 2026 team has been compared to that level of futility during its slump."

Not even close. Smoke had two CWS teams, one superregional team, one NCAA Regional hosting team, and one 13-17 SEC team who finished fifth in the SEC tourney, who won 35 games and were on the cusp of making a regional

It’s certainly the worst since Skip came here and since nothing before that really matters I’ll go with yes it is the worst

No! This is not a great team but you have to put it in perspective with the competition today. College baseball has become a nuclear arms race of money. Take a look around. This is not the same college baseball world that Skip competed in. Do I wish things were different? Absolutely. But given how competitive college baseball has become you can’t say this is the worst LSU team in history.

No, I’m sure some did have losing records. This team has a winning record.
