You're in way over your head on this.

Laval completely alienated the big money donors for baseball with his slovenliness (both personally and how he held the players accountable) and indifference.

So youre saying if Smoke would have been a brown-noser he would have lasted longer?

Sure there is. Cpm has consistently kept us as one of the best baseball programs. He could be much worse.

If it makes you feel better about yourself to believe that's what happened, that's okay with me.

But the fact is Smoke was a brown noser. To Skip Bertman. That's how he got the job to start with.

Smoke forgot a lesson that Skip taught him: you've got to have fan support.

Smoke went out of his way to offend his best customers. That was dumb. And it cost him his job.

This.

And I really hate to say it because Mike Martin is an awesome dude and I pull for him every year to win it when LSU isn't in it. If they don't do it this year that's going to be it. He's retiring at the end of the season. One of my favorite people in college baseball

sorry I selected the wrong thread, but if the subject is underachieving coaches I would suppose there is only one who has achieved what he was hired for, and that would be Pat Casey.

I was asking you a question my bro, since you know so much about the situation.

But my point was his team's success did not dictate him being removed from his coaching position, since he was fairly successful in terms of achievements and wins/losses comparable to other coaches (CPM). I will sleep good tonight regardless.

He also left the program almost devoid of talent. He basically would sign a ton of kids who had no intentions of ever going to college. Had he stayed, his record would have been every bit as bad or worse than Mainieri’s was in 2007. He thrived off of Skip’s talent the first couple years, went 2Q in Omaha twice, and got progressively worse and worse. He may have gotten another year had he not shite on the fans, but his days were still numbered. Mainieri basically had to rebuild the program when he got here.

Serious question and not trying to be a dick, but are you old enough to remember Smoke or are you just looking at his record and trying to figure it out? There’s a reason it took him 6-7 years to find another job, one he only kept 5 years

You people really need to realize college baseball is out of the days when a program may win 4 titles in 5 years.

The last 10 years you’ve had 9 different champions. I’m not necessarily advocating for Mainieri because there are some things that need to be fixed, but criticizing him for only one title isn’t a fair criticism.

Oregon State keeps an admitted pedophile on staff and everybody from the ad, to the coach to all their fans defends him. Yet, Will Wade allegedly used vague language that could possibly be an NCAA recruiting violation in a wiretap that nobody has heard, covered by exactly one "journalist", written about in a story by a known muckraker who works for a two-bit media operation, who's had a vendetta against LSU for years and LSU's Administration suspends their phenomenal head basketball coach, indefinitely.

What the frick is wrong with LSU?!

That’s fair but LSU’s program has lost its fire under PM and maybe a change is needed

And everyone not associated w Oregon State thought it was disgusting. They also held him out of the entire postseason the year prior, hoping the story would die down....it didn’t.

You're forgetting how empty the talent cupboard was when Smoke finished his last season. Everyone could see the downward spiral we were in.

In the last month of Smoke's last season, fans with season tickets in the Gold seats behind home plate (the "money fans") at the old Box were holding up signs that read, "Make the Box Smoke Free."

It was why Smoke was asked what the plan was to turn it around. Instead of articulating a plan, or maybe just saying he had a plan, he told his biggest boosters, "You're the enemy, I don't have to explain anything to you."

The lack of talent was one of the reasons Mainieri had his worst season in his first year at LSU. That team batted .256, by far the worst team batting average since Skip's arrival.

Maybe so, but not based on what's happening in March.

IMO, the legitimate criticism of CPM is that he was mastering the regular season but flopping post-season. All those national seeds and not much to show for it. I think he's realized that.

We're slogging right now but there's so much baseball yet to be played. It's so much about finding the pieces, putting them in place, and peaking at the right time.

Every single player on this team except for Chris Reid is underachieving. Hess may have turned it around. His last two starts have been great.

I haven't given up on this season, team, or CPM.

Curious to see the mood of this board after this weekend’s series. We’ll see.

Yes. Tim Corbin. Corbin has had equal or worse results with equal or greater talent.

It’s the weirdest thing. The bandwagon fan bases at most schools grow when they’re winning. With LSU baseball it seemingly grows after a loss.

How'd Paul finish in 2017? Back when everyone was freaking out mid season?
