So how has Oregon State won 3 CWS in 13 years

They've overcome their geographic disadvantage in recruiting and they had a fricking legit pitching coach.

Oregon State's success doesn't render my point moot. Especially in a thread where we are talking about underachievers.

Tim Corbin

you do realize that he was offered the job before we settled on CPM don't you? He turned us down. What has changed? CPM was actually said to be our 4th choice, and from what I remember that is being kind. He was more like 6th. People have a misconception that all top coaches are just waiting on a call from LSU, and that is just not so.
he’s listing coaches that have underachieved more than PM at their current schools.

Do you think I've been naming coaches I want at LSU? The title of this thread was literally asking if there are bigger underachievers than Mainieri. So I responded with the names of several.

Corbin has an awesome situation, arguably the best in the country. He's at a school that can give financial aid on top of the 11.7 scholarships and is coaching at an elite academic school. And his school is also located in a pretty awesome city. Vandy is an easy sell to a high school baseball recruit because they can offer what the vast majority of schools can't. There's a reason why they're able to convince guys to turn down millions of dollars to play college baseball for free.

But even with all the talent he churns out year after year, he only has 1 national title and 3 trips to Omaha in 16 years at Vandy.

Wow. 10 upvotes for Mike Martin. Is this sarcasm? He is 73.

What does Martin's age have to do with him being an underachiever?

I got confused because I was hastily reading and then people started mentioning who they wanted as replacement and somehow I thought Martin was a name.

Martin was listed as a bigger underachiever, not as a replacement suggestion. He's the all-time winningest coach in college baseball history with 17 trips to Omaha...0 national titles.

Lol. I thought you wanted him as our next coach. My bad. I am actually laughing at myself.

False. Smoke wrecked the program.

2002: LSU 44-22 and make a Super Regional
2003: 45-22-1 and CWS appearance (Smoke named SEC Coach of the Year)
2004: 46-19 and CWS appearance
2005: 40-22 but lost in regionals (first time ever since supers started in 1999)
2006: 35-24 missed the NCAA tournament then fired

CPM has missed the tournament in 2007, 2011

IMO Smoke did not get a very fair shake following the success of Skip. Had he won some games in the CWS and it may have been a diff story.

You're in way over your head on this.

Laval completely alienated the big money donors for baseball with his slovenliness (both personally and how he held the players accountable) and indifference.

When he was given a chance to explain why the program was faltering and how was he going to turn it around, he referred to them as "the enemy." And he told them he didn't have to explain anything to them.

You don't call your best customers "the enemy." At least, not to their faces.

This isn't hearsay, I was there when he said it and heard it for myself.

Skip got wind of it and immediately gave Laval the opportunity to resign rather than be fired.

I just want a coach that thinks hitting is important and hire a good hitting coach again. I also think it’s time for Dunn to move on just to get someone younger and hungrier

He’s gotten way too comfortable and just seems to be nonchalant about the plight of the program
