I still say 1998 is the most disappointing. LSU was ranked #6 after three weeks and was the highest ranked team in the SEC at that point.

It wasn't just that LSU lost seven games, it was the way LSU lost. To whit:

UGA vs LSU: UGA wins 28-27 in the final seconds
UF vs LSU: LSU up 10-6 at halftime, lose 22-10
UK vs LSU: UK wins on a last second field goal, 39-36
Ole Miss vs LSU: LSU down 31-10 in 4th, comes back to tie it, loses 37-31 in OT
Alabama vs LSU: LSU up 16-7, get outscored in the 4th Qtr 15-0, lose 22-16
ND vs LSU: LSU up 34-20 late in 3rd, lose 39-36.

And perhaps the most baffling:

Miss State vs LSU: LSU beats Miss State 41-6, Miss State goes on to win SEC West.

The only loss LSU had that was not ultra competitive was the Arkansas game, but at that point LSU was 4-6, it was the last game of the year, and had nothing to play for.

When I saw the other thread, 98 was the year I thought of, but then we can’t bash Les Miles that way

Yes, that team was stacked. Brought back pretty much our entire 97 team, though losing Faneca hurt more than we could have imagined.

They went 11-2 and finished #3, which was then only the 5th time in school history we finished in the AP top 3 (1936, 58, 59, 2003). I get people think it was our most talented team, certainly one of if not the most balanced but the mythology about it has grown beyond reason, mostly i suspect so people can bash Les Miles. It’s incredibly myopic, while a case can be made it was LSUs most talented team, it was not 2001 Miami type talented, they lost 2 games in the road to the eventual National Champs and a top 10 Auburn team. We weren’t the first or last team that came up short with a more talented team but won a year later.

1998 was a strange season for LSU football. I believe it was Sports Illustrated or some college football magazine that had picked them to play in the National Championship game that year. It seemed after losing to Georgia, the team couldn't really finish out games. If you look at the games against Kentucky, Notre Dame, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Georgia; if they finish those games off; the team is 9-2 with a shot to compete in the SEC Championship game. Instead, they end up 4-7.

This is one of those seasons that show you how things turn out when the cards always fall in favor of the house.

If you’re going to say “in history” you’d need to know more about LSU football than just the last 20 years. The 1992 season we went 2-9. We had the fab five coming in which was supposed to lead us to greatness. The 89 team was loaded, so it seems, with Hodson, Harvey Williams back from a year off, and on and on and on. We were pre season #6 and finished 4-7. Those two seasons alone were more disappointing than 98 imo

LSU fans were saying after the 1998 Georgia game, "we'll see them again in Atlanta".

So in 20 years the LSU fans have gone from optimistic after to the 1998 Georgia game to pessimistic after the 2018 Georgia game.

So what I'm really getting from this thread is even though this team for the 18' season has about zero expectations, there is a chance we could have a pretty good year

89 and 98 are eerily similar started in the top 10 finished 4-7. Great offense done in by bad defense.

92 was the worst season record wise but coming off 3 losing seasons I don’t recall expectations being much . I understand Hallman landing some highly regarded recruits especially at RB generated some excitement.

83 started in the top 15 after a good 82 season and went 0 for the SEC for the only time in school history.

74 also started ranked in the top 10 and finished 5-5-1.

1/9/12.

The game alone was enough to make it the worst season in history for me.

That night shook my fandom. It made me reconsider the way I felt towards sports. I've haven't really been into them as much ever since.

Maybe I'm a victim of recency bias, but 2016 is still tough to swallow.

They also played 4 road games that year. ALL were against opponents ranked in the top 10 at the time the game was played. LSU went 2-2 on the road vs. 4 opponents who had a combined 40-8 record. LSU played the top 2 teams in the East on the road as well as the top 2 teams in the west on the road. That was a brutal schedule.

Coming into the 98 season LSU was returning a ton of impactful uperclassmen (Faulk, Foster, Tyler, Booty, etc). One person ruined that season and subsequently Dinardo's LSU tenure...Lou Tepper. He took what was a decent defense on the rise in 97 and turned them into a horrible defense in 98 that couldn't stop ANYONE from throwing the ball.

Rarely in a team sport can you point to one person as the cause for a complete collapse, but Tepper was SOLELY responsible for that season.

Jesus To quote Bugs Bunny What a maroon. Worst game ok, worst season, that’s sums everything wrong with our sports culture

Offense was not the problem in 1998, Defense sucked badly....no one knew what a "drop" linebacker was.

Remember the Georgia game, Quincy carter and Champ bailey had really good games and always seemed to have an answer.

What galled me that year was the Alabama game, we had those Crimson bastards, we out played them . But then weird shite happened. Bama launches a bomb that looks like it was short of the receiver and going out of bounds, LSU player tips it to make sure itwas going out of bounds , the Bama player was behind him and snags the ball out of the air as it was out of bounds.

Then the on sides kick.....If Kevin Faulk was literally an inch taller....we would have won.

The 98 Bama game confirmed the curse to me. We were up two scores about to go three. Abram booty has a TD bounce off his hands into a Bama defender who returns it to midfield. Td, onside kick, td. Curse confirmed

I think I would go with 98, although 89 was pretty bad too. The only difference is that the national championship talk in 89 ended with Texas A&M running back the opening kickoff of the season.

Still, 1998 had what was then the 4th best offense in school history, but a defense that was easily exploited. I was at the Notre Dame game with my ND-grad brother; all during the ND go ahead drive, I was correctly calling out which receiver we would allow to be open. Worst defensive performance ever.

Oh, and we also lost at home to Bama on TWO tipped balls they caught for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

The 1998 team was bad and snake-bit.
