Coleman, Buzzy, Helenihi, Cain, Byrd. Ochinko and Dean were already recruited although I know Smoke was apparently looking at Dean to pitch.

Helenihi was a juco transfer brought in after Mainieri’s first season.

Helenihi

He was a JUCO that came in in 2008. Not a Smoke recruit.

correct, Blake Dean was recruited as a pitcher by Smoke. Yes, Ochinko committed in 2005. Smoke Laval was fired in June of 2006 before Ochinko ever stepped on campus.

You didn't denegrate his national title in 2009 back in 2009 and say, "well he won with Smoke's players."

What it really boils down to is that beyond the outsized impact of a couple of guys that either were or would have been horribly misused by Smoke, most of the contributors were brought in by Mainieri and his staff.

I was in college and slightly busy during the springs, not on TD, and certainly not following recruiting that closely back then. So no, I wasn’t critical of anything much less a championship. You caught me.

No one reasonable ever would have.

Acknowledging that there were some contributors on that team brought in by Smoke isn't nearly the same as giving Smoke credit. Even ell wouldn't do that.

All fair. But lsufball19 was saying none of them were there before PM came around. That’s just false…. Hence “kinda”

I give smoke credit for stumbling on Dean and that’s about it. While Coleman is the go to when people want to talk 2009 and Smokes impact, I’m not sure he’s even around in 2009 if Smoke stays.

yeah. The Coleman that pitched in 2009 was not the Coleman that was here under Smoke.

And noodle arm Blake Dean as a pitcher......

It's akin to the 2001 LSU football team that had a ton of talent on it from Dinardo, but was just put in the right position by Saban. But to a much smaller degree because Mainieri inherited a way less talented roster than Saban.

I'm not saying Ell was doing that, although he didn't exactly disagree with it, but the OP was. The OP's comment was that Mainieri's title was won with guys already here. Outside a few contributers, that team was built by Paul Mainieri. Coleman, Cain, and Berticcini were the only major contributers that "were already there" when Mainieri was hired.

We see this every time a coach that had great sucess once but needs to go now. People will pick apart the good and try to downplay it as something not that impressive. Regardless of what Mainieri has now become, what he was able to do so quickly will always be impressive. We went from the doormat to the CWS in year 2 and a national title in year 3. Smoke deserves no credit for any of that.

no

You literally replied “no” when someone said CPM won with players who were already around. Which is false when taken literally. I know what the OP meant. And I know what you meant. Which is why I said kinda. You’re both right in a way. PM had some of Smokes guys and a few were crucial. And PM didn’t JUST win with smokes players as if that’s all the talent he had.

We better be giving Les Miles his credit for 2009 because that shite don't happen without Chad Jones.

Paul's highlight year under scrutiny.. yikes.
