Apparently Auburn decided to start their #2 starting pitcher last night against Ivy League team Penn. Auburn lost the game 6-3.

The announcers for today's Auburn/S Miss elimination game were putting perspective on losing the opening game in a regional.

They said:

1) Only 1 team in NCAA baseball history has won the CWS after losing their opening regional game. (EDIT CORRECTION: Only one team has made it to the CWS finals after losing its first regional game. It was Georgia and they lost the CWS in the finals. So, NO TEAM has ever won the CWS championship after losing the opening regional game.)

2) Since the inception of the Regional/Super Regional postseason format in 1999, only 27 teams have advanced to a super regional after losing their opening regional game. That means only 27 teams out of 1,472 teams, i.e., 64 teams X 23 seasons (there was no baseball postseason in 2020 due to COVID), have advanced to a super regional after losing their first regional game.

I'm not vouching for the accuracy of what they said...just passing along what they said during the telecast.

LSU went to Oregon and lost it’s first game in the Oregon regional and came back to win it.

If the argument you're making is that Auburn lost to Penn because they started their #2, then it's a retarded argument formulated by someone who clearly didn't watch the game.

That’s why we threw Skenes game 1.

So emotional over a decision you admitted probably won't matter.

Losing your regional opener is pretty bad. It means you then have to win 4 in a row just to get out of the regional, so it's unlikely.

Doesn't mean it can't happen, of course.

Only 1 team went to the CWS final after losing their opening game since the regional/Super format - UGA and they lost.

Again, the pitcher was not the problem for Auburn, it was their offense only getting 4 hits the entire 11 innings...

I wish Skip, Smoke, and Paul had this info for the last 24 years when they saved their ace for the 1-0 game 15 times and went 15-0.

Pitching shuts down good hitting. Only 4 hits means the pitching was getting the job done.

I'm not sure you're understanding the discussion.

I don’t care how this thing plays out. Starting Skenes against Tulane was not the right decision.

LSU might run the table but starting the best college pitcher we’ve seen in over a decade against the worst team to ever make the field was and will always be the wrong call. Period. End of story.

And….went to TN and got smoked….0-2. The statistic is about winning the CWS after losing their first regional game.

Yeah, so? Is that supposed to disprove what the guys on ESPN said?

It just means that in 2021 LSU started its #1 starting pitcher, Landon Marceaux with a team best for starting pitchers 2.54 ERA, in its first regional game and still lost the game to Gonzaga, 3-0.

LSU then went on to win the regional and advance to a super regional making it only one of 27 teams out of over 1,400 teams since 1999 to do that.

So, what's your point?

I thought they said no team has won the CWS after losing their opening regional game. Only 2008 UGA made the finals but lost to Fresno State

I would have been a lot more nervous yesterday had anyone else been on the mound for us so I’m glad Skenes was pitching. Not to mention we didn’t have to burn our best relievers either.

You could be right about that. I know they mentioned Georgia in the same sentence about losing the first regional game and then "CWS championship" and it was about playing in the finals and not what I thought I heard about winning the championship.

Thanks for the correction.

This. We may not lose a game the rest of the year and be the last ones standing in Omaha. Skenes yesterday against the worst team to ever make the tournament was not the right call.
