I really like what Baker is doing.
some stuff from our D looked good, but we still gave up 7.7 yards per play, which is terrible.

And the last two USC possessions of the game were a combined 11 plays for 139 yards and 2 TDs.

You can't win with that kind of defense.

The offensive gameplans of both teams using a ball control passing game did surprise me.

I don't know if that was 100% the gameplan as much as the offense took what the defense was giving them...which was nothing over the top.

Otherwise, the game played out as I imagined and I told everyone to take the points b/c it was a last possession game.

I thought the opening line at LSU (-6.5) was absurd. Clearly the sharps did too, which quickly pushed it to -4 when real money started to come in.

Followed by our shizophrenic play caller who can't decide if we are hurrying up or managing the clock in a game where the O/U was 67 points and both teams had combined for 30 points with 8 minutes left.We continuously snapped the ball in our last possessions with the clock running and 20 odd seconds on the play clock. Timed out perfect for USC to win the game.

If the game was tied on that possession I would agree with you. But when you are losing the first objective is to score. You don't really play assuming you are going to score. You do what is necessary to score.

Plus, LSU didn't really rush anything on that last drive. They started at their own 25. On 3rd & 4 they snapped the ball with 3 seconds on the playclock and completed a 41 yard pass to Anderson. The next run to Emery was a bit rushed, but then they slowed down again. They snapped the ball on the sideline pass to Thomas with 4 seconds left. The next play, the run by Emery where it looked like he might shake the defender and score, was snapped with under 10 on the play clock. LSU then allowed the clock to run to the 2:00 TO and the next two plays were snapped with the game-clock not running.

Maybe only one play in that sequence was a bit "rushed". But when you are losing, running down the game clock is not the priority. Scoring is...regardless of how much time is left on the clock.

I think you may have lost track of time.

We were up by 4 with 7+ minutes left in the game, not our last drive

I'm referring to the 3rd and 1 where we lost a yard and had to punt

We burned 7 minutes on our first drive down to the 3. At worse we could have taken the clock down for a FG that would at least force OT

Don’t forget about the potential pick 6 that hit Stamps in the chest.

We had very consistent pressure and caused a lot of havoc. Just didn’t have the ball bounce our way. I expect that to change in the coming weeks. Keep applying that pressure and good things are bound to happen.
People don't get that it was very, VERY lucky that USC won that game. USC didn't lose one of the 4 turnovers that should have been had for that game. That penalty by Lacy was the one time they really got a good return. Nuss misses an easy 4 yard pass at the end of the game that would been at worst, a first down to chew more time off the clock.

It's like in the ridiculousness of wanting to fire Kelly, and even knowing of these plays, we still don't realize is that we lost that game more than USC won it, and USC is not a bad team. Our problems can be fixed. They were coaching problems and player mistakes that can be corrected. It even got Kelly thinking of playing the younger guys immediately.

Agreed, It was a great play by Perkins early in the game.

Not to shite on Perkins; but overall throughout the whole game, I was mostly getting frustrated with him in the run game. He just doesn't seem to be in the right spot when playing up the middle. And when he is in the right spot, he just looks overmatched physically.

Great picture. Awesome effort on lots of plays by HP.
I still dont understand why Baker didnt bring blitzes on USC with the game on the line. rush 3 DL and soft zone was absolutely idiotic

Nah. I thought you were referring to LSU last possession (singular) and not last possessions plural.

Regardless, 8:00 left with a 4 point lead isn't really a situation to start "bleeding the clock". Particularly for a team who had not run the ball well all night. I thought the 3rd & 1 call was dumb for a number of reasons...but not because it was time to start "draining the clock".

I think he intended to if/when USC got to a certain part of the field. While USC was in their territory and, thus, not in FG range, he wanted to prevent them from hitting a big play. USC started the drive at their own 25 with 1:47. The had gains of 5, 5, 9, 4. With 27 seconds left USC was still in their own territory (48) and well outside of FG range. Even with 18 seconds left USC was still 15 (or so) yards outside of FG range.

Hindsight is 20/20, and I bet Baker wishes he would have blitzed on the play where the WR caught the ball and got 15 tacked on for targeting. But I think as long as USC was well outside of FG range he was willing to allow a short gain to avoid a long gain if they beat the blitz. Remember, on the prior drive USC had beaten LSU for a TD on an (aborted) blitz...then one where Burns jumped offsides and USC beat Stamps in a one-on-one. So in that situation he may have been a bit concern that could happen again if he blitzed.

Perhaps I'm just weird, but the reason I'm not melting down from the loss is because we saw a LOT of good on both sides of the ball. The loss is frustrating because it feels like LSU let the game slip away when if just a handful of plays go differently LSU wins the game. The margin between a W and L was razor then.

Fair take. Not a lot to disagree with here.
