Interesting if it's the AD hiring him with no input from Schiano.

btw, hope not. People don't realize how good and how much good Austin is doing, and can do.

Well, one would assume $475,000... which is 25k over what he was making at USC.

I asked Perry directly if TAF is paying some of that. TAF (private funds) makes up for public official caps set by the legislature. The question is CAN TAF do that for what is technically a non-coach. I got a no-answer as an answer. But TAF is a private foundation, as long as it's not recruits they can give money to any individual they want (or accept it too).

Is that enough? I say no. Both in value and in what MAY turn out to be a standard position in CFB. Saban "has a guy" for everything under the sun, that shadow staff. Somebody has to oversee them and regulate them. That's our Austin Thomas.

But then you run into the conflict of paying a GM more than some coaches. Which I don't understand the problem. People like Alleva make more than some coaches; why is that a problem.

What are they paying Ponamsky? No way he can be a state employee.

No and it's been a point of contention for a while now, at least since right after NSD this year. AT should be making about three times the amount he is making right now. For all the things he does in addition to his normal responsibilities, that he does with high proficiency, he's just not compensated fairly at all. Supposedly it's because Alleva doesn't want to pay someone that much salary when they aren't a coach. AT loves what he does but is not happy with his salary. We will lose him unless Alleva is replaced by someone who understands AT's value and pays him accordingly.

Divide by 4 and you'd be a lot closer to the true amount. Not kidding. It's truly ridiculous and that's why we will probably lose him.

AT makes about 125k, which pales in comparison to his work load and the level of proficiency in which he executes that work load.

If alleva/orgeron let's him walk, shame on them; our program will suffer bc of it.

If Alleva won't pay him his worth, and orgeron wants him bad enough, he would ask for each coach to take a 1% paycut and O match the amount annually to give AT a raise. That should get AT to ~ 200k/yr.

He is WELL worth that...

Why, in this day and age of TV contracts and big time booster organizations we ever try to go cheap is beyond me. For christ's sake, it isn't the 90's where we legitimately have to balance the budget every year. LSU can afford to pay these guys top dollar yet we're trying to rationalize saving $. For what? How does it benefit LSU in anyway to not throw the bank at these guys?

You are confusing Austin with ponamsky

And whatever LSU is paying ponamsky, that money should be redirected to Austin

He is at a position where we have no really knowledge of comparable salaries or actual job responsibilities

It’s kinda hard to say he is underpaid clearly we paid him more than USC was willing to. And I assume USC offered him what he considered a good wage.

I think it's unlikely he leaves. He's been out recruiting this week. He is from Tenn and did go there this week to see some prospects. But, LSU needs to give him a raise and keep him. He could be our AD one day.

Here's a good article on him:

The General Manager tag that accompanies Thomas' position is a valiant effort at corralling his responsibilities into one title but it still fails. At varying points during my day with Austin at LSU any of the following would have been apt descriptors: Director of Player Personnel, Position Coach, Recruiting Coordinator, Associate Athletic Director, Assistant to the Head Coach, Graduate Assistant and more.

The dude is 31 years old. That is young talent you need to keep in house.
