re: I’m shocked Kelly’s attorney thinks his client didn’t do anything wrong and LSU owes him.

In an interview with WDSU shortly after Kelly's termination but before the November 10 lawsuit filing, Scott Ballard clarified the financial aspects of Kelly's potential $54 million buyout. He emphasized that it would be covered entirely by self-generated revenue from LSU Athletics (e.g., ticket sales, donations, and media rights), rather than state taxpayer funds. This was positioned as a reassurance amid public scrutiny over the massive payout for a coach with a 28-20 record. Ballard stated:

"The buyout will be financed by self-generated revenue... We're committed to handling this responsibly without impacting the university's core operations."

This comment came during ongoing negotiations, which Kelly's lawsuit later alleged were mishandled by LSU.

LSU agreed to a contract. They owe him that amount. Personally, considering the last 2 coaching departures, it makes us look slimey AF to always find some “cause” to disqualify payment.

This whole matter is gross.

This is making LSU look dysfunctional. You fired the man without cause and started negotiating the buyout.

Then 14 days later you said, no we didn’t fire you. Now we are firing you with cause.

Because to fire him with cause you had to notify him within 7 days of the termination. LSU didn’t do that. So now they just claim that they never fired him until now.

It’s nasty politics and it will be a huge red flag when recruiting coaches in the future

I’m not referring to “filing their answer” as their response to the law suit. I’m referring to them stating why they are firing him with cause, we they should have already done by now.

Attorneys are slimy scum of the earth. They're the sole reason auto insurance is barely affordable.

They'll do anything for a penny.

so scone said he's actually suing the state and not louisiana. and the state has 300 million in unpaid lawsuits, so kelly would probably not end up collecting anyting.
Stiffing him on his buyout after losing in court would basically nullify every LSU contract, present and future. No LSU contract would be worth the paper its printed on if there's no way to enforce the terms.

Kelly is suing the Board of Supervisors which is a state agency. That means taxpayers have been on the hook for this buyout all along if the donors didn't step up and they aren't.

Well, if he actually did anything wrong, why hide the details? It's a pr nightmare. It looks as if we are just trying to stiff him or the billionaire's didn't show up with the buyout check. Or , there are no billionaire's. Why hide it? There's nothing to gain, but there is a huge downside when you are trying to hire a new coach. Pay the man or give the details of what "cause" is.

The $800k/mo til 2031 was smart. It’s the reason Kelly is scrambling, cause he wants the cash now.

Kelly doesn’t care about his reputation. That’s why he is going for the max buyout, even with mitigation duties remain. He doesn’t plan on working he doesn’t give a shite.
