Bert Jones the entire game ,every game
I agree that Bert Jones should have been the full time starter, but I will give Paul Lyons credit for one thing - we would have probably lost to Tulane in 1972 were it not for Paul Lyons coming in to spell an ineffective Jones. That said, I ranked Bert Jones as the best LSU QB I had ever seen until Joe Burrow came along.

Absolutely loved listening to them, especially John Ferguson. He made a ton of mistakes, but most of us didn't care because he loved LSU and his voice was awesome.

True story...My father was a gambler, and not a very good one. Anyway, John Ferguson also did the sports newscast for one of the local stations. He was doing the sports one night and the baseball scores were on the board behind him. My father got out of his chair to try to look behind JF who was blocking one of the scores..

I'll enjoy LSU on my 75 inch 4k TV. Thanks. Keep your transistor radio gramps.

I worked for cable company in the late 80's and the 90's. This was when Tigervision was hot and heavy so I worked a lot of those Saturday night games chasing down bad boxes and bad cable connections. Trying to get the game back working when I was at homes that were having Tigervision parties. No pressure there

So did a lot of listening to the games on radio and it sure does bring a different level of enjoyment!

J C Politz was way better than Ferguson. I’ll never forget when Ferguson called a pass as “almost incomplete!” Just what does that mean? Complete or intercepted?

As I recall, John Ferguson did very little pregame. Walter Hill would turn it over to Ferguson at the kickoff.
“ Hello everyone and welcome to Tiger Stadium as. (kicker’s name) approaches the ball”.
Still brings chills to me !!!!!

JF’s call on fumbles was so enjoyable...

“It’s a FUMBLE, WAY down there, big scramble for the ball...& the TIGERS have recovered!!!”

At other times, it could be confusing to follow the action, but you knew he would eventually explain everything.

Saturday nights in the kitchen listening with my Dad on WWL. Didn’t realize how great I had it.

I would agree - painting a picture was not Ferguson's strength and it could get really confusing at times. but he had a great voice and it was the voice of my childhood, so the memories are good.

He also did the SEC basketball game of the week with Joe Dean for years.

Yes, great memories indeed.

Thanks for reminding, had forgotten JF did SEC basketball broadcasts as well. I did not forget Joe Dean & the “string music” descriptions—pure gold.

One of my fondest childhood memories was a time when I got to go to the deer camp with the “grown ups”. It was Saturday night and we were all sitting around a fire listening to the LSU game on the AM truck radio “here come your fighting Tigers”! I remember the smell of smoke from the fire and bourbon front the drinks (I got a mug of hot chocolate). I don’t remember who we were playing, but the year was sometime in the early ‘70s. Most of those people have passed away now, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

I remember hearing Walter Hill yelling in the background when Davis caught the pass.

f I remember correctly, every time the Tigers scored a touchdown Ferguson would say "Touchdown LSU". It was his signature call for a TD!

Oh man I wonder how he came up with that!

Very fond memories of listening to them. There was nothing that compared to being at my dads hunting camp below the head of the passes in Venice, listening to them call the game on the radio. Simpler times...

And of course the big bright Texaco Star commercials. Wish there was a way to download some of those seasons. Especially the Bert Jones era!
