The Rant will say LSU has to do this...but only armed with a contract offer of 4 years with a base salary of $4M with, but with merit based incentives to increase the annual salary to $15M per season. Oh, and there will be no buyout should LSU choose to fire him before the expiration of the contract.

LSU fans:

"These long term expensive contracts with a (nearly) fully guaranteed buyout are CRAZY!!!

Also LSU fans:

"You have to go try to hire Saban"

I can understand that, but do you think Saban would not be successful if he decided to return and deal with the different landscape?

I wouldn't bet against the guy being able to adapt and succeed if so decided. Dude is a very driven MFr.

He may be successful for another year or 2 if he can get some good core guys that buy in. But then what, he's pushing 80 and your back in the same position as before on the hunt for a new coach. I know its hard to put him out to pasture like that but if I'm LSU I am not buying into that experiment.

I'd say they are two different things, although both are pipe-dreams. I know Saban is 73 and decided to get out of the game. Even Ms. Terry recently said they're having too much fun in retirement. However, if you're looking for a new HC for next season, you have to at least call Sexton about the former LSU HC and tGOAT that brought LSU to it's first NC in 45 years and set the expectations and foundation that has brought LSU 2 additional NCs and played for another.

I don't agree with this train of thought.

I'd take 2-4 years of successful Saban, then worry about the future instead of only worrying about what happens years from now. Too much can change.

Anyhow, it's moot, just afternoon discussion. There is very little chance that Saban is coming out of retirement.

If I were president that would be Woordward's only out. Job on the line, get Saban back. If Nick says no, we start the AD search.

he himself said he regretted leaving

People act like he had some passionate love for LSU and thinks about it at night or something. He only regrets it because the grass wasn't as green as he thought it would be on the other side and he could have one or two more rings than he has today had he stayed.

If we could hire 50-year old Nick Saban, I say do it. Probably even 57-year old Bill Arnsparger.

Nick Saban is never Coaching at LSU again. Also hes 73 and the landscape of College Football has changed even he won't have the same success. Which is why he retired (well on top of the fact that he was burnt out).

And will be 74 Halloween day. Dumbass people wishing & hoping for Saban need to drink some prune juice & let that shite go.

I said in an earlier thread a couple of the biggest money boosters should meet incognito with Nick, and ask that question,
It should be done and could be done in the next 7 days

Get his recommendation for the best young & coming coach - tell him it's a two man deal = him and his designated successor in 3 years - give them both performance-relative contracts for as much $$$$ as can be assembled.

That's the issue, you don't tell Nick anything. He would want full control, blank checks and zero interference

LSU isn't paying a 60 million dollar buy out.

Saban will never coach LSU again. He’s 73 and quit coaching because he didn’t like where college football had gone. That hasn’t changed.

If Nick decides to wade back into the fray, he’s not going anywhere without a HC-in-waiting already on his staff, so that’s a moot point.

He may consider it if only because he’s a competitively driven person who misses the action and wants back into the game. You can’t rule it out. As others have said, at least make him tell you no definitively.

If you weren't paying attention, Saban really mellowed out his last few years at Bama. Biggest example of this were playful interactions with the media which he never did in the past. The 24/7 365 grind had taken it's toll on a man in his 70s even as competitive as Saban was. You can tell he honestly enjoys retirement & his wife enjoys having him around more.

well that would be even better - I was going with the idea he'd not want to spend the rest of his life coaching - if he did, all the more better.

NO. I don't know how else to put it. Give it up. He is done. He was great, the best if you may. But it is over. Tear off the band aid, we are in a new era of college football, one that does not include Nick Saban as a HC.

Oh yea, you get a field named after you, a statue, probably still has an office at the Alabama, and is worshipped by everyone there and wants to become the most hated man by everyone to become the LSU coach at 74. He has no allegiance to LSU anymore. That clip of him saying he made a mistake by leaving LSU was because he failed at Miami and should have stayed in the college ranks and at LSU. He has done more at Alabama and loved it there until he couldn’t compete anymore with the parity. That’s the only reason he retired. He couldn’t stand not getting the top recruits and they demanding money instead of wanting to play for him.
